Antifa: A Look at the Antifascist Movement Confronting White Supremacists in the Streets
Published on Aug 16, 2017 by Democracy Now!
President Trump is facing widespread criticism for his latest comments on the deadly white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia. Speaking at Trump Tower on Tuesday, Trump said the violence was in part caused by what he called the "alt-left." President Trump’s comment were widely decried. Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney wrote on Twitter, "No, not the same. One side is racist, bigoted, Nazi. The other opposes racism and bigotry. Morally different universes." We look at one of the groups who confronted the white supremacists in the streets: the antifascists known as antifa. We speak to Mark Bray, author of the new book, "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook [ https://www.amazon.com/Antifa-Antifascist-Handbook-Mark-Bray/dp/1612197035 ]."
Who are the antifa? President Trump equated them with white supremacists. Here's why he’s wrong. Antifascists may seem like a novelty, but they’ve been around for a very long time. Maybe we should start listening to them. By Mark Bray August 16, 2017 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/made-by-history/wp/2017/08/16/who-are-the-antifa/ [with embedded videos, and comments]

Trump Says ‘Two Sides’ Share Blame for Charlottesville Rally Violence [...] A senior White House official told NBC News Tuesday that President Trump wasn't supposed to answer any questions Monday. His team went into the event with the understanding that they would discuss infrastructure only and the president would take no questions. But once in front of reporters, the president "went rogue," the official said, and members of the team were stunned by the president's actions. After the chaotic presser, the White House put out a "talking points" memo for allies, which was obtained by NBC News. It led with the sentence, "The President was entirely correct," and included various references to violent acts "on the left," including the shooting at a Congressional baseball practice in June.
