Former British spy Christopher Steele has reportedly revealed the sources of a dossier containing information on Donald Trump and Russia to the FBI.

The dossier was first commissioned by Glenn Simpson and his opposition research firm, Fusion GPS. Mr. Simpson appeared before the Senate intelligence committee on 22 August 2017 and reportedly gave them 40,000 pages of relevant documents.

The hearing was conducted behind closed doors but committee members had said they were going to ask Mr. Simpson about the funding sources for the investigation conducted by Mr. Steele, who had once been stationed in Moscow.

There are ongoing parallel libel suits filed in US and UK courts regarding the matter of the dossier which has revealed additional details.

The UK case has revealed that at least $1 million of the funding for the Fusion GPS investigation carried out by Mr. Steele came from a wealthy Republican donor and the rest likely came from Democrats "who wanted to dig up dirt" on Mr. Trump, according to ABC News.

“Late last year, I received sensitive information that has since been made public,” McCain said.

“Upon examination of the contents, and unable to make a judgment about their accuracy, I delivered the information to the Director of the FBI. That has been the extent of my contact with the FBI or any other government agency regarding this issue.”
