F6, thanks again. During Alecia I sat on the floor in our spare bedroom and watched 100 foot pine trees bend over 45 degrees. Then about a 5-10 minute period of calm as the eye passed. Then all hell broke loose again as the pines were bent over the other direction. Somehow none of them broke, but the next week or so I had 22 of those big bastards removed... couldn't grow grass under them anyway. Since then, about 34 years ago, the oaks have thrived and have gotten huge.
We lost two beautiful oaks, one red and one a white, from the drought.
During Ike, a large oak near the lake and a native hickory near the house smashed my side porch and damaged my roof. I still have some of the great stove and bbq wood left... not much.
I hate to do it, but I may have to remove a couple of the big reds that are close enough to the house, or at least have them trimmed back...a lot.
Later and Best, bulldzr
