I must give special recognition to those near the bottom of this list for plugging away and sticking with it. That deserves a lot of respect!

There are 77 people who have participated in 6 (or more) PSL contests. Here are the top-40 based on the new rating system.
It is not based on ranking or return - at least not directly. It is based upon a contestant's differential between their return and the average return for each contest. Of course, the numbers below are the average of the differentials. And, if you don't follow that, just trust me. It's a better system - although still not perfect.

Lotto 11 board up yet?
MSGI:
"BTW, I think that the top 4 contestants have been in all of the contests."
That's incorrect and that's why it's a mistake to simply look at the returns of the top people.
Pike was in the first two (Averages +28% and +26%), but was gone for the last two (Averages -12% and -41%). Nothing against him, but every single one of us would have considerably higher returns if we participated in 1&2 and missed 9&10.
Also, GUY missed 7,8 and 9. (+8%, -3%, -12%).
I'm going to settle on one ranking system and that will be it. I can see how I might improve on Gilead's suggestion, but the modifications to it would be very difficult to explain and of very modest benefit. So, I'll probably just take the average PSL return for each contest and measure each person's "REAL" return with respect to it - and keep track of that.
Len
Hey, since when is 0% return an avg market? Are things that bad now?
PS- to supplement your negative thoughts, the 50% (horrible market) haircut of course is heavier than the 50% gain (great market) example in that a 50% drop would take 100% gain to regain equilibrium and 50% gain followed by 50% drop would put a port down 25% (uh my math sux so I'm not positive on that LOL).
So Be HAPPY and stop the negative vibes ;)
I for one will be happy to enter the next PSL (and probably BTHB) cuz there's actually stuff I can look at and go 'hey, that's cheap'.
Good luck, thanx for the legwork you guys do and of course Merry Fishmas.
I gotta go sing another round of 'Let It Snow' with some friends. WOOHOO! May get a white Christmas yet in Seattle.
Len, I think that you should keep tract of all three, but I realize that is a lot of work, so I will continue to keep tract of who the top 4 or 5 contestants are according to average gain for myself because to me these are the MONEY GUYS. BTW, I think that the top 4 contestants have been in all of the contests, but I realize that someone that has been in fewer than all could creep into the top 4 or 5. If they do I will be watching their picks for possible investments too.
KIK:
Sure. If I had a list of ONLY those players who were in all 10 (as you requested - and as I will do), then it wouldn't matter whether you did them by rank or by rating. There might be a slight anamoly here or there, but the order would be pretty close to the same either way.
Len
len
Wouldn't presenting the rankings for only those players who were in ALL ten PSLs negate your argument?
MSGI:
You are missing the point. Let's take it to the extreme. Let's say there are only three contests. The first one has an average return of 50% (great market). The second one has an average return of 0% (average market). The third one has an average return of -50%. (horrible market).
Person A only participated 1&2. Person B only in 2&3. Person A had totals of +40% and -10% - thus, he was below average in both.
Person B had +10% and -40% - thus, he was above average in both.
The "ranking" list would show person B ahead of Person A as it should since person B was in the upper half of both contests and Person A was in the lower half of both contests.
The percentage return list, on the other hand, would wrongly show Person A ahead of Person B because Person A had an average return of +15% while Person B had an average return of -15%.
That's the fundamental flaw in using ratings (returns) when they are all over the map and not everyone participates in all contests.
Your argument is in error because you are not factoring in whether those four were in contests that were skewed up or skewed down.
As I said, there could also be a built in flaw for using ratings as opposed to rankings. That would be if the number of participants were all over the map. Say you only had 20 for one contest and 100 for another. A person who got 20th sucked in the first one, but a person who got 25th in the second one was pretty darn good.
Gilead's idea is probably the best of all worlds. I suspect I'll get rid of both rank and rate the way I have them and go to just that one in the future.
Len
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
To expand a little more on my previous post, had I invested $400K ($100K divided equally among all the picks of each contestant) of the top 4 average gainers picks over all the PSL contests, I would have made $98,480. Had I invested $400K ($100K divided equally among all the picks of each contestant) of the top 4 "ranked" contestants over all the PSL contests, , I would have made $59,750. Now Len, I know that you just do this for FUN, but I think that the rest of us are here to try and make MONEY. So that is why I disagree with your post #746

I thought it just might be modestly more accurate. So for example if someone had a 300% return one contest and finished first their relative performance would be underestimated by pure average rank.
I'll take whatever you want to give as I am sure compiling the numbers is a PITA and I do appreciate the effort.
Gilead:
That would be another way to do it.

Therefore, the top-40 by rank is much, much more meaningful.

Len one comment on your rankings. I agree with the idea that ranking is more relevant than % gain given the rather unique last 6 months or so in the market.
What might be more interesting though would be to rank people based on their deviations from the average % return for each contest rather than pure rank.
So if I am in 3 contests and the average returns are
20%
50%
30%
for a group average of 33%
And I returned
40%
60%
20%
for an average return of 40% than my relative average return is +7%.
len, thanks again for compiling such comprehensive and interesting stats. Since it appears you'll be discontinuing average return ranking after PSL10, I'd like to request, if you can find the time, one final such ranking composed of all the players who've been in EVERY PSL. With a history of 10 PSLs under their belts, this should be a ranking of statistical (and historical (?)) significance. Thanks in advance and I'll certainly understand if your reaction is GTFOU...
A REAL LIFE EXAMPLE...
... of the problem with Top-40 by Return vs Top-40 by Rank. This is not meant to be pro Wyobuford or anti Echos, but it makes the point.
The worst two contests were PSL9 (-12%) and PSL10 (-41%). Obviously, if you were fortunate enough to miss those two contests, your return would be disproportionately HIGHER. Echos missed PSL9 and PSL10. Thus, he is 5th in return, but 31st in rank.
On the other hand, the two best contests were PSL1 (+28%) and PSL2 (+26%). Obviously, if you missed those two contests, your return would be disproportionately LOWER. Unfortunately, for Wyobuford, he missed PSL1 and PSL2. Thus, he is 28th in return, but 3rd in rank.
Since the number of contestants has not changed much from contest to contest, it is clear that a list with Echos 5th and Wyobuford 28th as opposed to Wyobuford 3rd and Echos 31st is fatally flawed.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ:
You can better learn the details of Top-40 by rank vs Top-40 by return if you read the previous post.
I almost did not include Top-40 by return for a very simple reason. The differential in the 10 PSLs based on the market conditions is extreme. Thus, if a person missed the worst contests or even the best contests, his percentage would be drastically affected.
On the other hand if there were a big difference in the number of contestants, that would affect his average rank. However, there really hasn't been much difference in the number of contestants. Therefore, the top-40 by rank is much, much more meaningful.
Don't be surprised if I quit posting top-40 by return at some point in the future.
Len
AVERAGE RETURN vs AVERAGE RANK:
I posted this at the end of each PSL contest.
Average return is a better measurement than average rank in most cases. For example, let's say Person A had +200% in the first PSL contest and the next closest was Person B at +50%. Now, let's say the next two contests were shown below:
Person A Person B
If you use total return, Person A had an average return of 96.7%, while Person B had an average return of 50%. However, if you use rankings, Person A had an average rank of 2.33 compared to Person B's average rank of 2.00.
Return Rank Return Rank
Contest 1 200% 1 50% 2
Contest 2 45% 3 50% 2
Contest 3 45% 3 50% 2
Clearly, IMO, average return is superior to average rank based on this example.
However, there is also a weakness in average return. Say, for example, that the Person C played only in Contest 1 and Contest 2, while Person D played in all three. Let's also say that the average return by all contestants in Contest 1 was 50%, the average return by all contestants in Contest 2 was 50%, but the average return by all contestants in Contest 3 was only 10% because the market had a major correction.
So, consider this possibility:
Person C Person D
Using this example, Person C would have the higher return average (70% versus 60%), but a lower rank average of 8 versus 6.
Return Rank Return Rank
Contest 1 70% 8 75% 6
Contest 2 70% 8 75% 6
Contest 3 - - 30% 6
Who is better? Well, IMO, clearly Person D is better. It wasn't because C was better that they missed Contest 3 and therefore, Person D should not be penalized.
So, there you have two perfect examples of why one is better than the other. Because of that, you can choose either one as your favorite method. I listed the top-40 in both.

NSOM CHALLENGE STATS:
It should be intuitive that those people who took the time to think through their picks enough to be part of the NSom Challenge would do better... on average.
There are exceptions, of course, but 5 of the top 11 (45%) were NSomniyaks despite only 29 of the 88 (33%) participating. Additionally, 9 of the bottom 11 (82%) were not Nsomniyaks.
Clearly, spending the extra time to analyze the stocks to the point of being able to present your DD to the board, is likely to give you better returns.

PSL 2: Networm # 1 +111.44%
What I find interesting is that just about every contest has had a Rookie placed quite high. That would have seemed highly improbable, but there it is.
PSL 3: StyleCounciler # 5 + 21.23%
PSL 4: Bluebear # 4 + 44.23%
PSL 5: Just4Fun # 4 + 61.20%
PLS 6: Skidos #22 + 8.69%
PSL 7: Northernlight # 7 + 45.31%
PSL 8: Littlefish # 2 + 25.24%
PSL 9: Manny # 9 + 11.96%
PSL10: RiskAnalyst #12 - 25.94%
In any event, anyone considering PSL who has not participated in PSL1-10 need not be intimidated. Simply apply the fundamental values that we adhere to and you should have a good shot a doing quite well.

Stocks per price group:
Each group has hundreds of stocks within it, so the sample size is very large. The differential between the worst group ($3.00-$4.99) and the best group ($5.00-$9.99) is 5.62% - probably meaningful. The $5-10 group has had better returns 8 of the 10 contests.
Shown below are the 10 contests and the returns for each price group in each contest.

Congrats! Added your subscription win on to your account.
Congrats MSGI
Anyone who even had a positive return in that environment let alone an enormous one deserves some serious kudos.
Way to go MSGI,
I would have been thrilled to even be in positive territory.
Thanks yield. I was sure glad that the contest ended when it did because I'm sure that had it gone much longer, you would have passed me. I don't think that the other contestants know how close you got on Friday morning when both RIC and NXG were at their HOD prices. I'm sure SSK knows, but I would guess that you were within a few percentage points of taking the lead. Happy Holidays to you too.
MSGI, congratulations!
Great demonstration of making money in this market on minimal trading. Thought I might have a chance to catch you, but ran out of time. Hope you have a great Holiday season.

PSL 10 post contest stats.
I will be posting all the usual stuff as soon as I can.

len, are you going to post the cumulative standings for all the PSLs, like you've done in the past?

Thanks again to SSK and yourself for all your hardwork on the PSLs. Also, I think you mentioned you're now doing a blog...care to post a link?

The winner gets... A year's subscription to IHUB....plus pride in being the #1 performer against a lot of very good stockpickers on the best stockpicking board on the internet. And, they get highlighted on the VMC Champions Board. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
ELIGIBILITY Solely up to the moderators of this board. Any contestant who is booted from IHUB during the contest is ineligible to win any individual PSLcontest.
A FEW POINTS
All picks will be "blind" picks. By that, it means they will have to be based upon the person's best guess rather than by seeing what others have done. When the picks are made, they will be deleted (hidden) from the board. Once the deadline passes, all picks by each person will be shown in the Ibox.
PSL10 will begin on Monday, September 15th and end on Friday, December 12th. Everyone must have their picks in before September 12th at 4PM EST. All beginning prices will be as of the the close on Friday, September 12th.
All picks need to be done on this board and not via PM so that we have a record. Also, you can never be sure if whoever you send it to is even around or reading PMs. If you post it on the board, it is permanent and fixed in time.
We will list each person's picks in the Ibox in alphabetical order.
CONTEST RULES
Shown below are all the rules with respect to PSL10. THERE ARE NO SIGNIFICANT RULE CHANGES.
Reminder: The most recent rule change in PSL7 from PSL6 - the methodology to determine initial qualification for a stock on dollar volume was changed to a more simple formula. Take the Yahoo 3-month average number of shares traded times the closing price on January 10th - allowing one day to make changes if necessary. If that number is over $5,000, it qualifies. If not, it doesn't. Of course, other qualfications still remain - ie 25 cent rule and VMC earnings rule except for wild cards.
Reminder: There was one change made during PSL6. That was an exception to the 15% rule penalty. "However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume." - see #19 below.
Reminder: These were the changes for PSL6 in case you missed them. Four transactions (trades or unfreezes) plus unlimited freezes** and up to two short positions instead of only one. **sole exception - see #19 (15% rule)
1) Pick exactly 6 stocks that you believe will have the greatest appreciation during the period of the contest.
2) Only cash dividends of over 10% will be adjusted for. Stock dividends and splits will always be adjusted for.
3) Each stock must be at least 25 cents as of the deadline for making your picks. If one of your stocks is below 25 cents on the close, you will have until midnight (assuming no news) to pick another stock that qualifies. If not, a cash position will be assigned to your portfolio.
4) Stocks must meet VMC earnings & reporting requirements (see explanation immediately below this list) with the exception that one WILD CARD pick will be allowed (see #16 below).
5) A minimum $5,000 average daily dollar volume for the previous three months is required on any original or any new stock. This is calculated as the Yahoo 3-month average shares traded times the closing price of the stock.
6) Foreign stocks are allowed as long as they are trackable on Yahoo. Some foreign stocks have pinky versions and that is ok.
7) One of your 6 original positions can be a cash position.
8) No options or warrants or mutual funds. ETF's are ok.
9) No limit on market cap.
10) It is not required that you disclose whether you own these stocks.
11) First come, first serve. All GROUPS of 6 must be unique. If a person already has your exact 6 choices you will need to make at least one substitution. This has not happened so far and is very unlikely.
12) You will receive 4 transactions during the contest. You can use 0, 1, 2, 3 or all four. That is up to you.
13) All transactions will be done as of the next closing price. If the transaction is done after the close, it will be as of the close of the following market day. There is a one half hour grace period to allow for UNDOING a trade - assuming there is no news involved to either part of the transaction during that half hour. This is because many closing prices are not available until 20 minutes after the close.
14) A transaction can be a trade or an unfreeze (just like it sounds). A double down (see below) is also a transaction. All transactions should be done on the PSL board - and not via PM.
DOUBLE DOWNS
--- A double down will be allowed where you can trade one of your stocks (or cash) into a "double" position of one of your other stocks (or cash).
--- Once double downed, always doubled downed. In other words, when two stocks are merged into one, they cannot be unmerged. You can trade, freeze or unfreeze the merged unit just as you would a single unit.
--- Once two stocks have been merged via a double down they cannot be double downed into another stock or another stock cannot be double downed into them. A maximum of 2+2 of the 6 units can be merged together. In other words, you can have two double downs at once with two other stocks that are not doubled - ie 4 stocks and 6 units.
--- A maximum of two double downs are allowed per contest.
--- You cannot double down until two weeks have passed - after the close of Thursday, September 25th - which will allow it to be in effect as early as September 29th - two weeks into the contest.
--- Only stocks that meet the earnings rule, the volume rule and the .25 rule can be double downed into.
15) Any stock - whether frozen or not - can be traded for cash, or another stock. In all cases, the value of the entity that you are trading away must be reinvested in total into the new entity.
16) There will be one Wild Card allowed. One of your picks can deviate from the VMC rule - either in terms of earnings or in terms of being a non-reporting pinky.
17) You are only allowed up to two short positions.
SHORT POSITIONS: A short position must take the form of any ETF. Shown below are four double-beta shorts against the corresponding index...
--- QID: Nasdaq 100
--- SDS: S&P 500
--- MZZ: S&P MidCap 400
--- DXD: Dow Jones Industrial Average
and one single beta short.
--- DOG: Dow Jones Industrial Average
18) A stock does not trade the day AFTER you pick it.
Trade: If one stock trades - whether Stock A (Sell) Or Stock B (Buy) you get a cash position and a transaction is used. If neither stock trades, the transaction is void.
Freeze: If you freeze a stock, whether it trades the following day or not is irrelevant. The freeze takes affect.
Unfreeze: If you unfreeze a stock, the unfreeze is voided and no transaction is used.
19) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume.
---If you make a trade, and the stock you bought opens the next day up 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. The stock you sold turns into cash. 1 Transaction used.
---If you unfreeze a stock and it opens the next day at 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
---If you sell or freeze a stock and it opens the next day down 15% or more on no news (and closes below 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens +15%+. Irrelevant
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens -15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens +15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens -15%+. Irrelevant
20) If a stock is halted for any reason and a person freezes it during the time it is halted, their price for the contest will be whatever it is frozen at AS LONG AS it remains frozen until the contest ends. Otherwise, the price will be the close of the first day of trading after the halt is lifted. Also, you cannot use those funds to buy or trade into any other stock while it is halted - just as in real life.
21) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person. It is based on closing prices. Explanation of Fill/Kill: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11239102
22) If a company gets sold during the contest, all normal rules apply. See this post. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11259177
23) DIGIRULE: This is a rule that comes into play only at the very end of the contest and only if the championship is on the line. It is designed to prevent extremely small dollar trades from affecting the outcome.
24) The deadline for all transactions is the market close on Friday, November 28th (two weeks before the end of the contest). A freeze (no longer a transaction) can be made up to the last day.
EARNINGS REQUIREMENT: To qualify, a stock (other than the wild card) must meet VMC earnings rules which are explained in the IBox on the VMC board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=3251 Essentially, it means that a stock must report** quarterly for at least a year or as long as it has been public. No exceptions. Secondly, the company must have earnings in the most recent quarter - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent two quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent three quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent four quarters. In other words, there must be some interval of time (1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters) where the company has positive earnings.
