Also, please go to the Champion's Board and read Gilead's summary. It is very interesting and should provide some good insight as to what allows him to consistently make good picks.

Well, those results may be "good", but I posted this when they were literally at their peak.

So, although I did better by freezing overall, I could have done a LOT better if I froze sooner on most of them.
Len
len: 'A' Team versus 'B' Team .... congratulations ! Those are outstanding results, helped by your exclusive focus on China microcaps during a period when they were hot. Your 'freeze' timing was also excellent.
Your results make me wonder why you aren't at least partly invested ....
My 'B' Team tried to swing for the fences and struck out badly ..... I made no trades or freezes. In PSL8 I'll be more focussed and will do at least some trading .... of course, if it's a down market, that may not help much and could hurt.

"His example should encourage anybody who has had a tough time to date."
Thanks for the encouragement...haha.
at least he's consistent!
Whose Best?
Well, first of all, these contests are about LEARNING - first and foremost. But, at some point, even apart from anecdotal evidence on the VMC board, it is good to determine who the best stockpickers and traders are so that we can (duh) leach off them - either by purchasing their picks or accepting their DD for a basis to make our own decisions.
I decided that I have a formula for doing this, but it doesn't kick in until after PSL10.
I'm prepared to say, after PSL10, that the top-5 cumulative [(rank + rating)/2] are better stock pickers and traders than the bottom-5. AND, for each additional PSL, I would add one more. So, that after PSL11, the top-6 are better than the bottom-6, etc.
Some would argue that you should be able to draw conclusions long before then, but I think being conservative is preferable for numerous reasons - not the least of which is that it is still only 6 stocks per contest and only 3.5 months per contest.
Besides, a lot can happen between PSL7 and PSL10. Here's a good example.... 2Morrowsgains.
Through the first 4 PSL's 2Morrowsgains had an average rank of 52.3 which was in the bottom 10. However, in his last three PSL's, he has an average ranking of 15.3 - which is in the top 5 for that period. Consequently, his overall average rank is now #25! His example should encourage anybody who has had a tough time to date.
Besides all that, since an important part of the PSL contests is LEARNING, it only makes sense that a person can get better. Not all of us have been investing our whole lives in microcaps. And, besides that, in the scheme of things, VMC is still embryonic.
So, FWIW, I'm not drawing any "official" conclusions about who is "better" until PSL10 - and even then, only at the extremes.
Len
Beigle:
Of course, the upside of posting it is that there are actually seven people below you, so you are not even close to last!
BTW: There are an additional 17 people below you who have not participated in at least 4 PSL's.

83 qualifiers.
Average Rank #76
Average Return #79
Len
Actually, I like to call that the "Nsom effect" :)
Mr Sheep continues his excellent performance track record. Overall through 7 contests, he's now an amazing #5 in average return of 33.7% and #14 in average rank of 28.3.
In PSL7 Mr Sheep finished a respectable #15 with a 26.4% return.
One can't go too wrong with the consensus picks, even if there's an occasional dud !
Congratulations to Gilead23 ! Congratulations also to Deathtotaxes and Shmolton for their close 2nd and 3rd place finishes.
And special thanks to SSKILLZ1 and Lentinman for all their hard work that makes these contests possible. We all benefit from the many fine investment ideas that these contests stimulate.
NSOM CHALLENGE RESULTS:
For whatever reason, those participating in the NSom Challenge outperformed those who did not participate (ON AVERAGE, OF COURSE).
A couple examples. 7 of the top 8 were NSom'ers, while 8 of the bottom 10 were non NSom'ers.
Naturally, it could be that those who took the contest more seriously to participate in the NSom Challenge are more likely to have done the DD necessary to do the challenge in the first place.
It could also be that BECAUSE of the fact that a person actually wrote down the reasons for all six stocks that they determined that one or more of them may not have been a good pick and changed them.
Who knows for sure? I just report the facts.
I will say that I find it hard to imagine that a person would not be better off if they put together the DD for the challenge and, hopefully, even more will do so in PSL8.
Len
KIK-WYO PHENOMENON:
I listed the top-40 over all contests by both Average Rank and Average Return some posts back. I followed that with arguments for and against one versus the other. http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=25325413 Here is a more specific example.
Obviously, if a person is #1 in one, they would likely be relatively high in the other and vice versa. It wouldn't even be surprising if the same person were first in both. In this case KnowledgeIsKing is first in average return, Wyobuford is first in average rank.
Being a statistician, and recognizing that this covers a number of contests, I would be inclined to bet heavily that if KIK is first in average percentage, he would be no worse than 7th in average rank. If WYO is first in average rank, he would be no worse than 7th in average percentage.
Amazingly, KIK is first in average percentage, but 16th in average rank! Even more amazing, WYO is first in average rank and (believe it or not) 16th in average percentage! What does this mean?
Well, basically it means that KIK's ranks have been extremes and he's coupled that with the second biggest percentage in any PSL contest. Conversely, WYO hasn't had any huge percentage gains, but has been extremely consistent in terms of his ranking.
To simplify the anomaly, here are the last 4 contests. As you can see KIK's average return is considerably better than WYO's, but WYO's average rank is considerably better than KIK's.KIK

Len, I was up in Canada and had my picks ready to go for PSL7. The resort had a direct lightning hit on the intenet system and took it out. I will be home the week of the 11th and I might even get my picks in early this time. I usually enter at the last minute, say I get my picks to you early that week, if something changes would it be too much trouble to make a last minute change? Sitting it out is no fun so I'm not chancing the last minute entry method again!

Kipp:
I will set it up tonight or tomorrow. Glad to see the prodigal son return home. Of course, you've got a couple brothers that need to see the family too! I'll go to work on them.

I shall return!
Thanks for all of your work!

Worthy:
You don't ask much do you??
Just as there is nothing on the floor that a dog will not eat, there is no stat to obscure and esoteric for me to pursue....
....however, there is the reality of time - especially at the beginning of a contest. Keep in mind, we don't log, or even note - much less calculate - the dollar volume for each stock picked. We only note whether or not it is obvious that it qualifies. If it is not obvious, we will figure it out, but that is only a handful of stocks. Thus, I can't imagine us putting that list together as our concern on the dollar volume is simply whether or not it qualifies.
Also, I think it is worth mentioning that, on average, a person's picks are likely similar to what they would also own. So that, if a person owned stocks that barely met the dollar volume rule, it probably means that's what they invest in too - and thus, represents either a lot of diversification or less capital to invest. If they pick stocks that have a much higher dollar volume, it probably means they either own only a handful of stocks or else they have a lot more capital to invest.
The point of that is that the contest, as I have always argued and (IMO) proven via a variety of ways, continues to accurately reflect (within reason) the kind of performance the we (as a group) average during the same period in real life. Of course, individual results will vary considerably from contest to contest. But, the sample size of the group is large enough that it does a good job of reflecting "our" returns.
Len
Of course, I don't know how I missed that one.
Nsom:
Exactly right. That makes all the difference.
It was a cool stat and kept people paying closer attention, but you can't have everything. In lieu of me increasing SSK's pay, it's likely to be that way in the future.
It's the old 80-20 rule.... 80% of the benefit comes from 20% of the work. The last 20% of the benefit represents 80% of the work. So, you sometimes have to dump the 20% of the benefit that is the hardest to come by.
Len
Shmolt: WC's:
"Do these numbers include wildcards that are traded into?"
No. They are based on original picks only. There really is no other (non massive work) way to do it. By utilizing original picks, ALL stocks begin and end at the same point making comparisons fairly easy.
I suppose it is possible that a person could argue that a WC could theoretically have more volatility and thus could be more likely traded for a gain - implying that using beginning WCs and non WCs unfairly affect the results. But, I would counter that the whole point of WCs is that you are waiting for some FUTURE payoff - meaning, if anything, they would take even longer to payoff than non WC's (beyond the time frame of a PSL contest).
In fact, I think that underscores the issue. I'm not positive that WC's (picked by VMC'ers) are less likely to pay off over time than non WC's. Frankly, given the probability that any of our stocks going up a mile will also come down a mile, it could well be that WC's EVENTUALLY pay off better (on average) than non WC's for the simple reason that you might have a better chance at 20-100 bagger - more than compensating for the higher number of failures. But, PSL contests are only 3.5 months long (on average) and that isn't enough time (clearly based on stats) to benefit (on average).
Len
That's an EASY one. No daily updates (including no daily winners lists) and no daily discussion triggered from them.
Interesting stat...
I found it interesting that the PSL 7 boards had far fewer posts than the previous contest boards...

Thank you very much Skillz and Len for all of your hard work. It is greatly appreciated!
Mr. Consistancy-
Thanks Skillz, I think I've found the name for my new vanity license plates. LOL
Wildcard Stats-
Do these numbers include wildcards that are traded into?
You made the right decisions at the right time. The trades and freezes have put more strategy into the contest and you made the right moves, and everybody already knows you're a great stockpicker. Congratulations, you deserve it!
Death 2nd in PSL7, 1st in KIK $100 giveaway
Deathtotaxes nosed out Stevenrisk to take the C-note in my contest. Both of them had CEDA (which became CEUA during the contest), the best performing stock of the contest. Under my tiebreaker, whichever of them had the next best performing stock in their portfolio takes the $$ -- and that was Death with his pick of GUFR.
Honorable mentions go out to snakeman84 and pnnymn, who also picked CEUA. Unfortunately they did not take the "nsomnyiak challenge" and were therefore ineligible for my contest. Hopefully they, and many more contestants, will be up for the "challenge" in PSL*8.
Big thanks to SSK and len for their continued tireless efforts on the PSLs!
Congratulations Gilead and all the other contestants near the top. As always, we all owe a big thanks to Sskilz1 and Lentinman for all the work they do on the contests and the indexes.
We are all here to make money but the contests and indexes are a great way to have some fun while we're doing it and share ideas at the same time.
Bobwins
Also want to add congrats to Gilead and thanks to Len and SSK!
Gilead well here's your answer.
Commentary: As you can see the People with 0 trades left performed the best, as people with 4 trades left performed the worst. Neither of these are a shock. I don't think the people with 1-3 trades used is an incredibly important stat, but it will be given anyways.
There are many reasons why people who used all their trades fair well, and those who don't use any don't fair very well. Here are two of my Ideas.
1) Trading More if you know what your doing just equals more success when it comes to microcaps. Trading enhances performances just yet another example of this, and another chance for me to knock long-term investing. That is always a good thing in my mind.
2) Some people get off to bad starts get disinterested, and just don't bother, as they feel what the point is.

Congratulations gilead23. I believe the "move of the race", as NASCAR would call it, is the freeze that you called. Enjoy your victory and welcome to the club. Your key to the entrance has been sent to you and should arrive shortly. Remember, it is top secret and you are not allowed to speak of what happens inside to anyone. Myself, Networm, Knowledge, Bobwins, DanLC, and Niles have a big welcoming party planned for you as well as the intitiation ceremony. Big hint: wear padded undies! LOL.
Once again, good job to the organizers and statisticians who decipher all this and allow all of us to share different thoughts and methods of investing.
LT_MATT haven't mentioned it yet
Right now I have 75% of what I want to own prior to mentioning it and about half what I would like to accumulate over the next 3 months.
The payoff I expect starts 2 quarterly reports out so there is no big rush.
As far as the humility thing I was not trying to show a bunch of false humility. Unfortunately for me perhaps I am not that humble as my wife would tell you. I do think I did well and well enough to win but so did several other people and my honest opinion is winning was a coin flip between 3 or 4 people. I thought they deserved that acknowledgement.
Gilead, as long as you're being humble, what was that table pounder you mentioned? I missed the ticker symbol on that.
