Thanks to all who have done so much here whether it be the statistics or the ones who post their stock picks and their DD. With the returns people have consistently accomplished here two things are definately obvious 1)why not invest in mutual funds 2)credibility (never ever listen to the ANALyst as they have IMO ulterior motives). Once again...thanks!
Or maybe rank all the stock picks by $ trading volume and use rankings to rank each contestant.
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Sskillz and Lentinman for all the hard and high quality work tracking and reporting. I really do get invested in my relative standing and get excited and bummed out when my picks go up and down--especially since I have always owned most or all of my picks in real life. It felt good to win the last week and end up 18th in the contest especially since 1)my picks reflect my bias in real life to invest in higher market cap stocks with higher $ trading volumes on higher exchanges and 2)I have only done 1 or 2 trades in the history of PSL consistent with my "hold and mold" investment strategy in real life. I realize going in I'm not "playing to win" which may seem like an odd way to participate, but I am most interested in seeing how my real life strategy performs over 13 weeks against the shorter term trading strategies of expert stock pickers. For this contest I had 3 NYSE picks(BX,DFR,EGY),2 NASDAQ picks (HRBN,FSIN) and CML.V. In real life I don't own BX or EGY but the others make up a significant % of my portfolio.
I think the minimum trading volume requirement that was imposed clearly makes the contest more reflective of real life investing. As the $ size of my portfolio has increased, there are still many stocks picked in this contest in which I couldn't take any meaningful position given the very small average dollar trading volume. Given all the statistics you guys generate, I would ask you to consider for the next contest ranking each participant at the beginning of the contest based upon the average $ trading volume of his picks. One issue would be whether a very large cap stock (like BX above) would skew the results. There could be some cap imposed or perhaps stocks could be assigned a "1" through "5" based on average trading volume. I realize it's easy to think of work for others to do, but this would be particularly interesting to me, and I thought others might appreciate its relevence as well. Also, it only needs to be done once at the beginning of the contest.
Whether or not you take up the idea please know how appreciative I am of all the enjoyment and learning you have provided me by sponsoring the PSL tournaments.
Thanks folks for the hard work you put into these contests. Great fun, and well worth the participation. Looking forward to next year <bg>.
SHORT THE WINNER???
Back at the end of PSL4, MSGI indicated that he "shorted the sh$t out of Bobs TRGD". http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=15586107
So, I gotsta wondering what happened to the very best stock in each contest after the contest ended. The results are below. Overall, as MSGI did, you should get away with shorting them. Contest Contest
The average return is -26% - if you bought these stocks at the close of each contest. The last two have been positive, but it is also true that less time has gone by where the stock could drop. Also, RVEP (PSL6) did not have that great of a return for being #1, so it is not that surprising that it has not necessarily fallen.

FINISHING POSITIVE:
Shown below are the contestants that have the best records (minimum 5 contests) in terms of finishing each contest with a positive return versus a negative return.
Only Researcher59 and Mr. Sheep have finished all seven contests positive. Several others have finished all contests they have entered positive, but they have not entered all seven.

ROOKIE OF THE CONTEST (ROTC):
Northernlight +45.31%
Here are the ROTC's for each of the contests after PSL1.
LTMatt + 9.74%
Swick + 3.13%
PSL2: Networm # 1 +111.44%
What I find interesting is that just about every contest has had a Rookie place very high. That would have seemed highly improbable, but there it is.
PSL3: StyleCounciler # 5 + 21.23%
PSL4: Bluebear # 4 + 44.23%
PSL5: Just4Fun # 4 + 61.20%
PLS6: Skidos #22 + 8.69%
PSL7: Northernlight # 7 + 45.31%
In any event, anyone considering PSL who has not participated in PSL1-7 need not be intimidated. Simply apply the fundamental values that we adhere to and you should have a good shot a doing quite well.

BENEFIT OF TRADES:
SSK shows the original portfolio average return as well as the average return of a portfolio (meaning with trades) each week in his Indexes report.
http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=25323365
Here are the results and the differential (all in favor of trading) since PSL3. We have no separate stats for PSL1 and PSL2, although I did another type of analysis after PSL2.
http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=10886067
Therefore, I'm showing the differential for each PSL contest except PSL1. Trades No Trades DIFF
As you can see, the differences are fairly minimal, but a gain is a gain. Also, keep in mind that it is harder to get the full benefit of trading in the contest vs real life because you have to do it as of a closing price versus during a day when a stock may have spiked up or down.

AVERAGE RETURN vs AVERAGE RANK:
I posted this at the end of PSL6 also.
Average return is a better measurement than average rank in most cases. For example, let's say Person A had +200% in the first PSL contest and the next closest was Person B at +50%. Now, let's say the next two contests were shown below:
If you use total return, Person A had an average return of 96.7%, while Person B had an average return of 50%. However, if you use rankings, Person A had an average rank of 2.33 compared to Person B's average rank of 2.00.
Person A Person B
Return Rank Return Rank
Contest 1 200% 1 50% 2
Contest 2 45% 3 50% 2
Contest 3 45% 3 50% 2
Clearly, IMO, average return is superior to average rank based on this example.
However, there is also a weakness in average return. Say, for example, that the Person C played only in Contest 1 and Contest 2, while Person D played in all three. Let's also say that the average return by all contestants in Contest 1 was 50%, the average return by all contestants in Contest 2 was 50%, but the average return by all contestants in Contest 3 was only 10% because the market had a major correction.
So, consider this possibility:
Using this example, Person C would have the higher return average (70% versus 60%), but a lower rank average of 8 versus 6.
Person C Person D
Return Rank Return Rank
Contest 1 70% 8 75% 6
Contest 2 70% 8 75% 6
Contest 3 - - 30% 6
Who is better? Well, IMO, clearly Person D is better. It wasn't because C was better that they missed Contest 3 and therefore, Person D should not be penalized.
So, there you have two perfect examples of why one is better than the other. Because of that, you can choose either one as your favorite method. I listed the top-40 in both.

do I get any special awards for having THE LOWEST performance in BOTH of the last 2 weeks?
SSKILLZ heres a suggestion
Check out how the number of trades used correlates to returns. You have always contended trading more gets better results. Here is an opportunity to test that thesis.
I would be curious what the results were if you decided to do it.
Shmolton thanks I appreciate the gracious response
Its much easier to be gracious when you eek out a win. Fact of the matter is the top 4 were so close that who won was more a matter of luck than anything.
We had a bad market day today and all of my picks were frozen. From a contest perspective if the market was up 200 points today I am pretty sure it would have been either you or death. For that matter if someone in Iowa decided today was the day to buy 20k for whatever random reason it would have been different.
I felt I did pretty well with my picks but actually winning was nothing but random noise that could have reversed itself if the contest was 5 days shorter or 1 longer.
Any of the top few deserved it as much as I did.
Great Job, SSK and Len!!!,,,and Gilead23...LJ
Yes I did it. I'm finally done. Off to get some sleep. Hope to see you all participate in VMC PSL 8. Have a good weekend Everyone.

Move Up/Down Using Consistency Standings (In Position Terms)
Obviously you Knew I just couldn't of left it there. My next question is in terms of Position who benefitted the most by using consistency standings compared to the regular way we look at things. Also who was hurt the most. Did you Move Up/Down (in position terms) from where you placed in the regular standings. Well it's Time to find out. I just want to say congrats to the person who benefitted the most from this statistic (Moving up the most places) ROGUEDOLPHIN move up 23 spots looking at it from this perspective. Anyways without further ado here is the info.
Note: - means you were negatively affected by consistency standings. Hope This Helps.

Mr. Consistency Standings
The Methodology: I provided a Mr. Consistency stat in VMC PSL 1, but couldn't do it in contest 2 + 3 due to trades. Anyway I found a new way to handle the situation in VMC PSL 4, 5, 6, 7 and beyond. Yes it it a different calculation then the one used in VMC PSL 1, but I still believe it shows a consistent stock picker, hence I'm going to call it Mr. Consistency standings.
Now first it is important to recognize that we start out with 6 position and end with 6 position. We may not have 6 different stocks in the portfolio, or the same 6 stocks we started with, but we still have 6 different positions.
From A calculation standpoint, we Take out the top performing and Worst Performing position of each person's PSL. We then Average the other 4 and we get an answer. I'm not going to bore anyone with the math behind it as it is very boring. But I believe this should give you a good idea of what I've done.
As you can see from a consistency standpoint. SHMOLTON was up 70.96% using the consistency standings. So congrats to SHMOLTON he is Mr. Consistency. There are 41/77 portfolios in positive territory using this stat instead of 44/77 the way we look at it to get a VMC PSL Champion. Well anyways I hope everyone enjoys this, I put a lot a work into this one, but I feel it is worth it.

BEFORE YOU PICK A WILD CARD IN PSL8...
...You may want to consider these Top-20 and Bottom-20 stats.
We instituted the option of one wild card in PSL3 and that rule was in place for PSL4, PSL5, PSL6 and PSL7.
Punch Line: Wild cards have been a bust so far with one major exception - TRGD which was the #1 stock in PSL4. Here are the details. PSL3 PSL4 PSL5 PSL6 PSL7

Top WC:
Another way of looking at this is to evaluate what the top WC was. In this case, CTUM.OB (+35.71%) was the best WC, however that only ranked as the 29th best stock.

Wildcards are big laggards ! It just reinforces the notion that profitable companies outperform .... and supports our rule that only profitable companies can be highlighted on the VMC board.
Non-profitable stocks belong on zip-code-changers .... unfortunately they can move you from a house to a shanty rather than the dreamed of castle.
All 6 Units Positive:
Once again 10Bagger is on this list. Here are the people who have had all six units positive for each contest to date.

Wild Card versus Non Wild Card:
One more way to look at the question of flight to quality besides (DOW vs VMI/R) or ($5> stocks vs <$5) is to look at the (wild card vs non wild card).
SSK began keeping this stat in PSL3. In each contest the non wild card index out performed the wild card index, however in the three "bad" markets, the wild card index got hammered by the non wild card index. Non WC WC DIFF
Once again, I wonder why anyone picks a WC when the odds are stacked against you from the beginning.

1) There may be something to the notion that when a stock is over $5.00, it gets more notice by more serious investors - especially when many funds cannot invest in under $5.00 stocks.
2) These sample sizes for each group are HUGE! I would be very surprised if the next 7 PSL's were much different with respect to the $5.00-$9.99 group's outperformance.

VMC PSL 7 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 15 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 237 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 75 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Other indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 31 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 206 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 39 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like SUWN.OB has 3 units because it was picked 3 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 411 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like UVE is weighted much more heavily and has 18 units because it was picked 18 times in the contest. Next, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

Actually $3.00-4.99 stocks is the worst performing group over the last seven contests, as you see by my last post. So this contest is an anomaly compared to previous contests. Whether these stats change/stay the same at say VMC PSL 25 remains to be seen.
How did stocks do for the Seven contests by there purchase price.
This is a collective look of the Seven contests results merged together.

$3.00-4.99 Purchase Price:+4.56%
$5.00-9.99 Purchase Price:+12.99%
$10+ Purchase Price: +7.54%
Commentary: As we can see if we look at the Seven contests the $5.00-9.99 Purchase Price stocks are doing the best, and the $3.00-4.99 stocks have done the worst. In My Opinion, this will be very interesting to see if the trends continue after numerous contests, although it might not mean much I still like the info. And I hope everyone else likes it too.
SSK: the $3 to $5 stocks seem to perform the best in our contests. I doubt it's that way in the broader market, but who knows ? If I find the time, maybe I'll try to get a YTD sample from the Nasdaq ....
It's a remarkable statistic also evident in prior contests .... Len has posted on this before.
{correction - as per SSK's subsequent post, overall through all 7 contests the $5 - 9 range does best}
How stocks did in Purchase Price groups?
I put it into 5 groups as you can see below.
$.25-.99 Purchase Price
$1.00-2.99 Purchase Price
$3.00-4.99 Purchase Price
$5.00-9.99 Purchase Price

$3.00-4.99 Purchase Price:+7.82%
$5.00-9.99 Purchase Price:-0.54%
$10+ Puchase Price: +2.53%
So as we can see the $3.00-4.99 stocks had the best Performance +7.82%, and the $0.25-0.99 did the worst up -9.15%. Don't know if this means anything, but just presenting another stat for everyone to look at. Hope everyone enjoys the info.
I only had one stock pick in top 100 of returns and it was the only original stock pick with a positive performance...
Cash outperformed 4 out of 5 other original picks...
Trades can enhance a bad performance...
Enough of the good highlights...

Trade Usage (VMC PSL 3-4-5-6-7)
Trade Usage Per Each contest
VMC PSL 3 40.15%
VMC PSL 4 53.73%
VMC PSL 5 40.99% (48.66% adjusted for extra trade)
VMC PSL 6 44.32% (51.14% adjusted fo extra trade)
VMC PSL 7 43.00% (49.78% adjusted fo extra trade)
Commentary: As we can see trade usage fell from VMC PSL 6. I expected Trade usage to Increase in VMC PSL 7 compared to PSL 6, so I guess I was wrong. Right now I expect Trade Usage to Stay in low to Mid 40% range in future contest based on this data. Hope this helps.
Congrats Gilead!!!
Those freezes yesterday won you the contest.
