The crash happened around 6:10 pm Sunday, and a black Tesla appears to have approached a line of cars stopped in traffic at a high rate of speed, including a Waymo, colliding with one and causing a chain reaction. As KRON4 reports, seven vehicles were involved and there were eight total victims reported, with one victim killed, and two transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A dog was also killed in one of the vehicles.
The black Tesla that may have caused the crash, pictured by the Chronicle here, appears to also have been linked to a hit-and-run involving four vehicles on I-280 which occurred at roughly 6:09 pm, just one minute before the Sixth Street crash. As Bay City News reports, the I-280 incident caused only minor injuries. The CHP is investigating that crash.
Tesla’s China operations team on Monday denied that a technical failure was to blame for a crash on Nov. 25 in the southwestern city of Chengdu involving a speeding Tesla and 11 other vehicles; three were injured but no one was killed. An analysis of the car by the US automaker found the accelerator pedal had been pressed hard, increasing the vehicle’s speed from 54 kilometers (34 miles) per hour to 132 km/h at the time of the crash. Queried online in China about why the brake light was on but the car did not slow down, the company explained that the brake pedal was only applied two seconds after the initial hit when the brake was already damaged. The car owner surnamed Wang told Chinese media outlets that his new Tesla, registered the same day, accelerated suddenly and had been unable to stop.
Details of over 200 Autopilot-related accidents were complied, with new patterns being discovered.
The report states that in the accidents, Tesla’s Autopilot struggled with obstacle avoidance, and cars also veered off the road.

Jain is one of tens of thousands of Tesla owners who have experienced premature failures of suspension or steering parts, according to a Reuters review of thousands of Tesla documents. The chronic failures, many in relatively new vehicles, date back at least seven years and stretch across Tesla’s model lineup and across the globe, from China to the United States to Europe, according to the records and interviews with more than 20 customers and nine former Tesla managers or service technicians.
