Yep. SW for the devices say the batteries are fine. Even replaced the mouse with a wired one.

I'm at work, so doing this from memory. How about a brand new problem ...
Machine is a 840D, with 3GB RAM, Raptor 150 drive, NVIDIA 6600, Logitech wireless KB and mouse video card. It's been remarkably stable, until recently.
The machine locks up - and I mean, cycle-the-power-locked-up - at random times, that seem correlated to using Firefox 2.006. The only clue I've ever received from Windows XP Pro (fully current, at least for today), is that a video driver deadlocked in a thread. Yesterday, I found the most current video driver for my card, and installed it. Still happens.
I'm stumped. Any clues?

On one of the EFT blogs that I follow, there was a study done showing that large caps perform almost as well as, or better than, small caps, when VIX is 'high'.

This chart shows that same result.

Yeah, I thought so too. But it "seems" to be working on another USB port. "seems" == Shows in Explorer, can read jpg files (all I've tried), DOES NOT appear in Disk Manager.
Oh, and once I changed ports, the 'error messages in Event Viewer / System stopped.
Not convinced I'm anything but confused. Maybe more Tullamore Dew ...

On the other hand, when I plugged the original 'failed' external drive into another USB port, it mounted and worked, but I did tell me "might be a hardware problem" ...
I'm not sure of the connection here, but my external, USB drive just failed. And, when I plugged the other external USB drive into the same cables, I got the same failure message.
Both had been 'thought good' drives.
Very interesting ...

O/T aj, if the ONLY medical insurance that was mandatory / required was catastrophic, and everything else was out of pocket, you wouldn't need 100 claims adjusters and billing plans per geography. That kind of stuff is easy to administer and trouble shoot. Every other detailed plan won't change anything.
Providers, who aren't high end cardio / onco / specialists get screwed by payers and patients and the Fed's. To boost their paying volume, they prescribe drugs - fast, easier, more patient satisfaction. And, yes, that moves the cost of feeding the drug companies down to the patient.
New drug to market costs are a Billion $US or so. Why? FDA, preemptive law suit defense, and a strongly held belief, backed by billions in pain and suffering damages, that the best defense is to avoid a risky future. Frankly, I'm astonished that we waste the time and money proving efficacy of new drugs.
Free market my nether regions.

O/T My opinion, not that of my employer, is that health care costs are driven by the payment systems, primarily, followed by so-called life-style choices. Once upon a time, I had the task of estimating how much Health Care Revenue in the US corresponded to "imaging" services, and believe me, it wasn't a big chunk of the multi-trillion buck spend.
And, I had a vested interest in maximizing the number.
Health care payers employ a LOT of people. Making the payment process simpler / more efficient will involve whacking a lot of them. Hard net tradeoff. Taking away their individual pirate management compensation structures: priceless.
Many states already have laws against self-referral's for imaging and other services.
As for charging more for various chronic conditions, I'd lean much more heavily towards credits for positive activities - gyms, exercise, weight loss / maintenance, smoking cessation, driving records, ...

Yes, I have. I've got it on 3 machines in my house.

The US Constitution is a political document, that describes the intent of the people who choose to live under it.
The Constitution of the United States of America
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
All men may be created equal, but they need to choose to live that way.

My house, MIL apt included, is 3100 sq ft. If I counted the whole basement, it'd add another 2500 sq ft. Just the finished part is about 500 sq ft.
If I listed my house with any of the basement added, it would be odd.

It's not quite so that you have to reboot. What you really need to do is release and renew your DHCP. The simplest way for them to tell yo uwhat to do is reboot.
Get to a command prompt "Run 'cmd' type ipconfig /release', wait, and type 'ipconfig /renew'. You'll get a new lease, and off you go ...

Thanks. I tried it, but had no luck.
While I was at the Mr. Softee bug shop, I used the search function on a part of the error message and got ...
1-10 of 3,881 containing "refers to a location that is unavailable"
So, I think it's something about NTFS ...
I also tried plain old brute force ...
public static void Main()
{
string path = @"C:\Documents and Settings\Rich\My Documents\My Music\The Moody Blues\A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado..";
try
{
Directory.Delete(path);
}
catch (Exception)
{
Console.WriteLine("The Delete operation failed as expected.");
}
finally { }
}
And, got this for the exception ...
- $exception {"Could not find a part of the path 'C:\\Documents and Settings\\Rich\\My Documents\\My Music\\The Moody Blues\\A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado'."} System.Exception {System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException}
Is odd ...
Anyhow, keep them cards and letters coming in !!

Thank you all for the suggestions, and the link to unlocker.
But, no, that didn't work either.
I believe that the problem is the folder makes / has references to a no-longer-there disk drive someplace in my life. And believe me, there's been a lot of them that have come and gone.
But, NTFS just will not let it go.
Any other ideas are more than welcome.

Gave it a try. In fact, I'd already had it on my machine, and forgotten about it.
Had to get to use it from the Properties menu, and the utility puts a tab on that sheet.
Didn't work.
Other ideas welcome.
Going at it in C# seems like an interesting idea, but I'd really rather not do the work / take the risk.

I could not resist the 'nam again part.
The US has a long history of defeating insurgencies "well enough" for the political purpose of the time. You can look it up.
South Vietnam fell to an invasion of North Vietnamese regular troops after the US abandoned it.
And, as for the 10 years part, the Phillipines has had insurgents for at least 100 years.
I'm just sayin' - it's never 'the same'.
Good trading.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot tonight when I get home.

Well, it looks like some kind of reference to files.
Problem is, I can't make the directory go away, attempting to open the directory yields the error message, and, it throws an exception in a directory walk in C# when I try to access it.
Any ideas for a way to get rid of it are welcome.

Two items:
I couldn't agree more about avoiding Dell stuff. Their business model was wonderful, their focus on costs was OK, but the descent from inexpensive to cheap to crappy goods is just too sad.
Office 2007 Excel is SLOW. Real slow, like it heats up the dual cores in my Pentium D 3,2 G 3GB machine and is still slow.
To be fair, some stuff seems the same - cell edits, recalcs, drags thru cells.
Charts are incredibly slow to redraw, and editing a text box on a chart is simply impossible. WTF? Do I need DirectX 10 to speed up Excel
Any help in getting it to run faster, short of cpu/mobo changes, would be welcome.
OTOH, my copy of Office 2007 Pro is legit, and free, so ...

I would agree that the drive that wants to be formatted may still be able to be used (isn't demonstrated dead).
Sadly, I'd agree that the drive that is non-responsive will make a wonderful doorstop, or a nice paperweight.
Maybe you can sell it on ebay as dead parts?
rr
Using only Windows, I don't know of any way to tell if an unrecognized drive is OK. There might be vendor utilities, but I don't know.
The only way that I know, to tell if the drive is OK, using Windows only, is to try and format it.
What I meant: Your information about the drive, so far as this conversation, isn't sufficient to determine if the drive is OK or not. All that you know is that the drive isn't totally dead (borked being the technical term ).
Format it, and you'll know more about the drive.
