The one I used most, which is out of T DOT is
http://www.howardchui.com/
Link shows a few others - Steve's was good at one point.
Once you get to Howard you can read the forums which can be helpful. Unfortunately the 1X and the GPRS, when I looked before, were so different that you couldn't get one phone base model that worked on both (ie my Nokia 8390 only works under GSM - but they may sell a 8395 that works under CDMA for example - where the network is different but otherwise the phone is similar).
The negative for me was a lack of NET usage knowledge - so asking "how good is the internet on the phone" was rather useless since no one cared for that. If you can narrow down to one or two, you might want to try and get the manual and read a detailed list of the features.
My Nokia 8390's best feature had to be the IR - beaming numbers from the Palm was worth the price of admission. But oddly a lot of phones, even today, do not even have that feature - stupid really. I think you can even have a net connection via IR.
To me I would lean toward ensuring it has Bluetooth. I have a corded headset - and a few times I try leaving the car and the phone is dangling - eventually the jack at the phone started to fail and I had to buy another. You could then get a bluetooth wireless headset -- which probably is phone independent - whereas mine only works on Nokias.
I haven't even looked at all the features - mind you they want you to get a picture phone so that they make $$ with you sending pics back and forth. Of the 4 in Toronto, Bell has been the slowest in adopting newest technology with Telus being number one.
Do you own a PDA Kastelco?

But why did you pick Sept 21? First dsy of fall or something?

In my brain MS probably had the "splintered off" ruling in their head.. and Office would proliferate onto other O/Ss namely Linux... but no such beast happened.
China can push what they want. Maybe in the future something good will come out of it.
No idea how Foghorn Leghorn will do for MS but I do believe their days of printing money are numbered. Seriously, I think something big is brewing. Not an OLD v. NEW IBM type "big". Something much much bigger - like a Nokia of old selling rubber boots to the new selling cell phones. That big. Hey they have a massive warchest and can do absolutely anything. My thoughts anyways...
Anyahoo, well the only thing I have to worry about in the future will not be language but life and death - namely how my Cayman // Caribbean home will survive a hurricane.
(Though somehow I think we are saying the same thing LOL!
(now back to reviewing cURL and Perl... thanks Louis!)
Cheers!

He has had a winning formula - up to now. Teaming up with MS and Intel are old school agreements. Nowadays AMD/Intel performance is tied and OS wise - well that I see limited - I think Microsoft still is king and will be so for some time to come. With MS's dominant Office, I really really can't see Linux as competent desktops taking off.
I have no idea if Dell can re-tool and sell non-Intel/MS stuff in China - you would hope he didn't sign his soul away like Bart.
But you and I probably agree - he probably did. And now he is royally farked.
Then again, are you telling me he can't take over a few China companies and keep them as a separate company outside the Dell fold?
Speculative at best.
I haven't checked Dell's products lately - but
(A) Aren't they tied to Intel?
(B) Aren't they tied to sell Microsoft OS?
They aren't getting out because they can't make money, they are getting out because they are locked in agreements with these two titans.
I agree totally there is no way in hell they could make a buck there stuck with those two albatrosses.
Question: Could Dell compete if they were able to sell machines with AMD and say Linux? If they have factories there and direct sales - I would say probably.
NO?
Conky Rulez!
BTW: I made an error in my tissue paper. Was there today and the price is not $8.96/12pk but $9.96. That makes the price $5.49 for the same 6pk at No Frills that sells there for $4.25. $1.25 or $0.21/box more
You talk about rear projections and plasmas - perhaps you spec'd them out last year and the year before and compared them today. I haven't so you have me at a disadvantage. 2 years ago the plasmas were $10K and today are what? $5-7K for something a lot better? But what does that prove except what I said that tech products are always dropping in price.
I think you are mixing things up. I am stating, tech is a hard call when you say "prices are dropping etc". You cannot compare those things to oranges, eggs or milk. The latter haven't changed in centuries, the former is constantly re-inventing itself and the way to rid itself of old crap is to flood the market with cheap product. The illusion is that the prices have dropped, the reality is, the stuff is junk - the computers that Sam's sells are crap I could I paid more for 2 years ago. But the reality is - I don't want 2 year old technology.
Interesting though - in WMT today, I saw an 8X no-name DVD burner for $99. Plextor at Costco is $184 for 12X. Nowadays, I would tend to buy a no-name at Costco over a brandname because "regardless of the brand" they will drop in price. The negative - I am seeing this same old "4x" media - so I buy a 12X recorder and have to pay MORE for media (if it even exists) to burn at 12X.
The only area of tech I can agree with is memory. Memory for years has fluctuated all over the map. But you can't sell me on anything that just keeps dropping anyways. CDs - I couldn't give a rats ass what they cost today - I probably have enough to last me until I am comfortably in the DVD world. They want people to buy CDs and end up holding worthless junk instead of the manufacturers - which are licensed to print plastic money.
Consumables - yes - they tend to say high. I don't think I ever bought color Inkjet ink in the 2+ years I owned it for less or more than $49.99.
But your "point" is skewed. You didn't say "consumables" you said "tech stuff".
So in short - computer consumables, memory, groceries - yes they are going up. But "tech" which includes gear, TVs etc - are going down.
blake
Not sure I agree with your but not tech stuff so much.
Dell has decided to leave the price war behind and that reflected better margins on their stuff in the last quarter. Techs are a hard read because new gear keeps coming out and forcing down prices of the old stuff.
DVD media, for example, is on the whole, around $1CDN/disc. Last set of CDs I bought was Sam's opening and that was $0.33/disc. I forsee a real flood on the market of CDs that can't be sold. Who says a DVD shouldn't be $0.80/disc (same product)?
Care to elaborate? You don't pay $4 for eggs the day they are put out and pay $0.50 for the same a week before expiry. You pay $2.27 always.
I definitely see creep in the groceries but moreso in the toiletries. Last week I go to Walmart and see a 12pk of tissue paper - for $8.96. No Frills it is $4.25 for 6. So it is cheaper for two by less than $0.50 buck at No Frills right? WRONG!. Majestic (brandname) is sold at WMT and they do the "No Name" for No Frills. Guess what. WMT is 136 count. No Frills is still 150. So I have been buying about 6-10 6packs of tissue from No Frills these past few trips and will continue to do so. I saw the decrease from 150 - 144 with Scottie but couldn't believe my eyes when I saw 136. Based on the 150 count that is $4.94 at WMT -- a 16% price increase.
Sorry to hit tissue paper on you... if I had a tissue I would give it to you so you could wipe your tears of joy..
In the end the direct expenses are what affect me. So I will manage where I can.
(On the last box of "Salt Water" Kirby, I bought last December at Zellers... I should have bought about 6 more cases I think..)

Interesting article...
In the air-conditioned chill of the visitors' area, a grad student runs through the basics. Instead of the white-hot fuel rods that fire the heart of a conventional reactor, HTR-10 is powered by 27,000 billiards-sized graphite balls packed with tiny flecks of uranium. Instead of superhot water - intensely corrosive and highly radioactive - the core is bathed in inert helium. The gas can reach much higher temperatures without bursting pipes, which means a third more energy pushing the turbine. No water means no nasty steam, and no billion-dollar pressure dome to contain it in the event of a leak. And with the fuel sealed inside layers of graphite and impermeable silicon carbide - designed to last 1 million years - there's no steaming pool for spent fuel rods. Depleted balls can go straight into lead-lined steel bins in the basement.
So we have the turbine side covered bud.. what are your prospects for hoarding uranium?
As far as fuelish?
"Opposition to nuclear energy is based on irrational fear fed by Hollywood-style fiction, the Green lobbies, and the media. … Even if they were right about its dangers - and they are not - its worldwide use as our main source of energy would pose an insignificant threat compared with the dangers of intolerable and lethal heat waves and sea levels rising to drown every coastal city of the world. We have no time to experiment with visionary energy sources; civilization is in imminent danger and has to use nuclear, the one safe, available energy source, now, or suffer the pain soon to be inflicted by our outraged planet."
DUH? "Hollywood-style fiction"? Dunno about that. TMI did have a meltdown. The brain power in PA during the incident wasn't so swift.. imagine the same plant in Arkansas.
Little off kilter there I think.
Like TV. Sure they have 43" Tubes.. but the mass is a huge problem. So they are "trying" other technology like "LCD", "plasma" and "rear projection". Sure they are not close to the quality and life of a tube, but they are steps toward the common goal. Likewise we need alternatives. Like notebooks powered by hydrogen cells (until the water leaks out at the back and causes a short circuit).
Cheers!

I do love Las Vegas.. which is the fastest growing metropolitan area in "North America".
I wonder if they will have changed the constitution by then.

President Arnold Schwarzenegger?
As Arnold Schwarzenegger launches his political career, it's worth recalling a scene from the film "Demolition Man," which takes place in the year 2026. As Sandra Bullock attempts to bring Sylvester Stallone up to speed on what has happened in the world in the last 30 years, she refers to the Schwarzenegger Presidential Library.

Nuclear and Beyond..
Just to clear it in my head...
Even in the United States, despite all the hand-wringing about nuclear power, the share of electricity generated by the nuclear has risen from just 4.5% in 1973 to over 20% today...making it the second most frequently used fuel source for producing electricity (after coal).
The article opened up a question - I thought since the meltdown of TMI-2, they banned all new reactors in the US.
Taken from "Short History of Nuclear Regulation, 1946-1999"
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Full Text
Licensing New Plants
The Chernobyl accident added a new source of concern to long- standing controversies over the licensing of several reactors in the United States. In the aftermath of Three Mile Island, the NRC had suspended the granting of operating licenses for plants that were in the pipeline. The "licensing pause" for fuel loading and low-power testing ended in February 1980. In August 1980 the NRC issued the first full-power operating license (to North Anna-2 in Virginia) since TMI. In the following nine years it granted full-power licenses to over forty other reactors, most of which had received construction permits in the mid-1970s. In 1985 it authorized the undamaged Three Mile Island Unit 1, which had been shut down for refueling at the time of the TMI-2 accident, to resume operation.
Basically most of the "20%" number above is probably based largely on the permits and approvals before the TMI2 disaster. I am still wondering phyically how many NEW plants, since the TMI2 disaster have been approved.
.. time to run though..

Bush and the election - Commie Views..
Was listening to some commie propaganda yesterday on CIUT FM.
Basically a communist from Trinidad was stating how Castro and Cubans were a catalyst in ridding South Africa of Apartheid.
Next up was a freelance journalist - stating what could happen on Nov 2. That if we see the likes of NH fall out of the hands of the GOP, the Whitehouse could generate a Terrorist Red Alert across the US. This would force the closure of the bridges on the west coast - such as Kalee-forn-ee-a and that would hurt the Dems. ..On and on went the scenario..
I have trouble with that - since I would believe those states would hand over the electoral votes into the Dems hands anyways... each state is different though - don't believe CA is a "prorated" electoral...
The other, more interesting slant was on the Cubans in Flordia. As many may know already Washington has made it difficult for family members to visit Cuba - rules on what they take and how long they can stay, and the frequency of the visits. (My take was very little; very short; very infrequent). The blurb on the radio was that the newer generation of American born cuban's is really don't believe in the embargo and the overall treatment of Cuba - they are not siding with older generation.
I don't really know enough about Cuba and the issues - which probably is the main issue in Flordia - too young to know and to appreciate the fight. But that is a sell job -- and I don't see much selling. When I heard what Washington did in this regard, I figured it was not a swift move - just before the election (the new rules went into place July 1). Not to throw the Cubans into the spanish speeking group (but I will), spanish speaking Americans is like 25% of the population. I have been keenly aware of that - for investment purposes. Unfortunately the likes of GE own Spanish broadcasters - and I doubt that those would have great impact on the GE bottomline... so I continue my quest.. for me swamp! (Flordia-Swamp-Shrek thingy!)
Well another side of life for sure.
(of course they didn't say they were communists..)

Meanwhile at home - well you know I listen to Techno/Dance - so that is blaring (2year old loves that - falls asleep pretty quick) - TV in the top right of my screen - whilst doing whatever with the rest of the 21"...
.. anyways the highlight of my day (no not attacking people on Stockcharts forum... though that was a bit funny) - I am at Yonge and Bay - calling into Telemax to see if any of my AGI fills hit. My wife has to go to Gap - I am on may way across and I sees out of my eyes -- "TD WATERHOUSE" - duh! Computer terminals et al. YEAH RIGHT!! So I cross the street and I am in there - Embry on Market Call (suppose it was the last old one); CNBC (no volume); Ticker above; a few nice plasmas with prices.. I was able to log into my account and verify my trades. Pretty cool...
Three things
1) Mozilla/Netscape allows you to "RIGHT-CLICK BLOCK IMAGES FROM SERVER" - I do that for Yahoo!;SI and iHUB - works most of the time; iHUB cleverly draws a BORDER around so I still lose the real estate. If you did this with Kastelco I would assume all images from "sympatico3" would be hit. But think "sympatico" itself would be ok.... (ie sympatico; sympatico2 etc)
2) iHUB offers a way to turn off sigs (does that even work because it doesn't for me - but I am not paid up).
3) In Mozilla/Netscape; Preferences; Privacy; Images - the bottom - allows you to show "repeat" or "single" or "none" for animated gifs. this sounds to be the best option.. esp for those that can't sit still in a library... hearing "SHHHHHH" all the time...

DUH! The heading of the verbage I placed says "Moving Averages and SharpCharts2". S/C supported pointed me to that.
Find it odd and rather cheesie actually - seems to me pretty straightforward to have the shifting MA already available in the first version.
But I am a simple man.. so who is to say?
I misquoted. We are using version 1 and they are testing version 2. Anyways.. it works in the newest so I guess we wait.

EMA/SMA shift doesn't work.
Moving averages are available as a price overlay feature on SharpCharts2. From the price overlay option, you can choose either a simple moving average or an exponential moving average. The first box to the right is used to set the number of time periods. If charting on daily periods, then 50 would be for a 50-day moving average. If charting on weekly periods, then 50 would be for a 50-week moving average. The second box can be used to shift the MA lines to the left or right by a specified number of periods. The moving averages are based on closing prices and multiple moving averages can be overlaid the price plot.
Does not work.
In the current version, I use SMA [50] [0] and SMA [50] [10]. The lines are equal. Likewise the second as SMA [50] [-10] the lines are equal.
When I used the Version 4 (per the last FP reply), the same examples above - show up as different lines (never equal). I can see in the box SMA "50,10" or "50,-10" and visually see the shift.
Nothing says it is not available for lurkers - my impression was that everyone would have functionality but that the number of overlays was restricted.
Hence a bug or incorrect documentation.
Charly/Cush - where are we with V4? Weeks? Months? Q2/Q3 of 2005? Enquiring minds...
Further, based on what I am seeing, the ability to post charts outside of SC will no longer be supported?
OT: Canola - Was listening to a story on the radio (fancy thing with lights and sound but oddly no pictures) - think it was CBC Radio 2 - I assume you heard about the issues with Manitoba - the temperature has been 0C one or two nights - with a layer of frost - farmers over the next few days will know if they might lose there crops. (they mentioned Canola - for one farmer; can't comment on the other affected crops).
Not wheat but interesting nonetheless.

As long as you don't call me psychedelic.
I went downtown today and just before I left I made a drop into the Worlds Biggest Bookstore - Investment section - I find they have quite a good selection of books. (even though I will buy them via Amazon.. the worlds largest bookstore?).
Anyahoo was reading a few things here and there then a elderly man (w/hearing aid; poor attire/look; bad B.O.) showed up. I picked up a book and leafed through it a bit and returned it to the shelf. He then made a comment about the author, Price Headley and mentioned he visits his site, BigTrends.COM regularly and it was a good read.
He is also a reader of IBD and recommended that. (Yes, that too was something I was planning on looking at seriously this fall).
We spoke a bit - and mentioned another good contributor to read was Alan Farley (see below). On TheStreet.com amongst others.
I spoke of the junk, in a respective tone of course, and he mentioned the big one out of Ottawa - Orezone. He seemed to suggest he picked up some in the $1.20s. But I am not 100% (except he had 50,000 - gotta go back a year to see the price lower than 85 so me thinks he is a high roller). I mentioned that was a top pick by Embry recently.
The guy had high praises for their work - that one of the majors was pushing ahead with work on one site and that was sort of a "confirmation" of Orezone's find seeing as they (Goldfields) wouldn't waste their time otherwise. Mentioned "Essakan Main Zone" (which Goldfields is a partner). Another find was looking good too (assume it was Bondi).
He then said that a really good newsletter he subscribed to was OrMetal. (I suppose he was inferring that is where he got his picks from)
Seemed pretty knowledgeable.. (a lot of "next times" in my life happen -- screw up bad this time, but next time it will be different). I should've probably said maybe one day we can get together and talk.... but I have met some doozies downtown before so I was a bit leery..
... few other tid bits.. but that's another story.
Funny how seemingly uneventful moments in our lives might actually lead to something interesting... perhaps even prosperous...
And dagnagit.. didn't ask if I would see him at the show in October.. never know... maybe whilst eating a dawg with Kirby I'll see him..

Alan Farley is the well-known author of the bestseller, “The Master Swing Trader,” as well as a frequent commentator for MSN Money, Barron’s and others. Acclaimed by investment author Tony Oz as “one of the best instructors in the industry today,” Alan’s reputation is the result of his exceptional success as a swing trader and his ability to show others how to use his master swing trading techniques profitably.

BTW: Anyone have a big stick? My junk doesn't seem to want to move with the $7 gold rise...
Well I was going to say about BD's post - that it doesn't mean anything since BD is from Florida and the theme is that people from non-US places are having problems seeing the pics.
(I guess for this time only I will not include Frank as part of the Anti-Toronto conspiracy. My Canada does not typically include anything East of Pickering; West of Mississauga and North of Newmarket... but sometimes I must bend..)
Hey Louis -- are you having similar problems with seeing the pics in the Sigs and Header?
blake
iHUB issue - me thinks so. I saw the soccer ball all the time before. In Mozilla you can block images from certain servers (ads for me) - so I have done that - I still see the place holder though. But as you are not seeing them either then, that eliminates my problem. And you had a problem too with images from your server - but that can't be related either.
sob
EDIT: That is pretty odd because it appears for some the HEADER and SIGNATURE picts never fire - but the main "chart" picts always do. Yet I can see my logo -- just fine (I assume everyone else can). Mine is from a US (New York New York.. what a wonderful town...) server.
Now that is a great image.
Few things
(1) Your soccer ball doesn't appear for myself lately -- similar to the new headers for earl et al that FP updated. But the S&S pict was fine. The ball is a broken link unless I right-click view-image - then it is ok.
(2) I have vague wonderful memories of that show. Two episodes I really liked and remembered are from Season 1 it appears (go figure -- for Mash it is first 3 seasons):
004 - The Copper Caper
Fred's suspicions about a used-copper salesman are ignored by Lamont, especially after his son checks the metal's going price.
- they were buying copper which was actually the neighborhood pipes - the last scene was they had no running water as their pipes were stolen too..
014 - The Piano Movers
A great deal on a grand piano finds Lamont and Fred lodged in the apartment of a wealthy eccentric.
- when they go to move the piano and everytime the owner came back he couldn't believe how he (Lamont) could let his poor old father do all the work.

Response from Reuters on Marketcap
Oui Oui Louis - a blackhole indeed.
Following is the explanation provided to the Help Desk:
The market caps are updated at different times. On the Reuters.com site this information is updated on a weekly basis using the Friday Close price to calculate the market cap. Yahoo calculates its market cap daily based on the previous days close. We do not provide the market cap information to NASDAQ and therefore do not know how they calculate it. Both the yahoo and Reuters site calculate the IBM market cap using 1.675B shares outstanding and MSFT based on 10.862B shares , the variation is due to the changing prices.
(HA! And you pull up MSFT and the bottom has the Reuters logo... anyways.. I guess I can't wrap my head around Nasdaq buying Reuters data without Marketcap... but I suppose..)
Thanks for the request FP...
Imagine - a planned stock price drop... well for that one I am not so adverse to buying a little bit more if the 21st trick holds true as I still own some and have made money on it. But as to whether the actual metal rises above 400 to 450 - 500. I am not holding my breath.
But I agree with your theme - which is more important - I have to get out of small thinking and into bigger thinking. Playing these pennies? Gotta check the warrants. And yes you have mentioned this before amoung others - I am passive on this but should be agressive.
The volume though wasn't huge for the 12c drop -- and no I am not suggesting that Friday's activity was due to the warrants.

When I go to download historical it is pretty limited (O-H-L-C-V). If I go to Yahoo I can see a VIEW with more robust data - but again at the start of the next day it is reset (BID-ASK for example).
But you get my bit and you are suggesting - why care about "updating" a 52W value when you can just "re-get" the 52 week data. I agree with that in theory.
But my bigger plan is to backtest data - as such, if I miss 2 days, I may lose "detailed" pieces which I can not retreive - so I am back to building the 52W.
Anyahoo, I am at that stage right now - so I will revisit it all - go with the thought to d/l OHLCV and rip the 52W et al - then only worry about it (dated stuff) if I really start to use those fields in any back testing. (today I would say which stocks have a marketcap of X then backtest the data with the pricing only).
BTW: I cannot reply to private emails here, except during happy hour -- but then I am drunk then anyways -- but you can PM me on SI if needed (I have updated my iHUB profile to get to my profile on SI). Would appreciate any new sites you might run into and I will likewise advise - though I am comfortable posting here and I believe in sharing the knowledge.
Cheers!

(FYI: Onsite in the US I charged $1000US/day mind you around 2000-2001 that was not insane then cuz everyone was rich and nobody got hurt. Paying $5000/day for Java programmers was... well boyz those were the dayz..)
On SU - right now I see
SU.TO - up 21 to $36.97
SU (N)- up 42 to $28.09 -> $37.23
$0.26 difference - pretty large in my eyes.
(Conversion is $1.3254 right now)
Anyahoo, just an observation. I am intrigued. I think the last time I had a stock that traded on both exchanges was Republic Waste. I both at $15CDN sold at $25 then bot at $26 and sold at $52. Yes fleeting was it was, a nice gain - early in my life. (my lesson of "stay away from the pennies sexton - they are not for you.." was never even a thought then.. but yes I seem to do a lot better on the higher priced stocks)
Interesting alright... very interesting.

Perl - neato!
At Yahoo I was using the CSV stuff. The perl method looks interesting. One negative with Yahoo! (maybe you know more than I) is that once the day is over you cannot retreive the detailed info any more. Said in a different way - if I pull up 5 symbols, I can then download the CSV for those 5 for the "day" (or last I suppose) of fixed fields. Those fields are no different than going to the specific stock and getting say 10days worth of history. The advantage of know this is - if my system crashes and I lose 5 days worth of information, I can then just "re-do" all stocks for say 5 days and boom everything is back up. If I rely on the "day-to-day" details - I am farked. Unless you know of a way to get the DETAILED stuff going back in time.
Yes the detailed is good - and yes I was looking at two things - an intraday model and an EOD model - I view them separately in my needs. ie Intraday is more "alert" data and EOD is more "report/scanning" data.
Do you know how to get Detailed after the day is over and everything is reset?
Yes a 52 week range - I can get that anytime summary or portfolio style - the Perl app seems to be a faster way of getting at specific fields. My wget method was (CSV excluded) to look for keystones and then rip accordingly. Once I setup a specific VIEW and rip accordingly, I can then get one or 200 stocks without fail. that perl app gets around bothering with the VIEW.
Technically I don't need a 52 week range, for example, if I have 52 weeks worth of data and just rebuild that reference. But yes, if I can use the perl app and get that every day, then that would save a bit of cpu time if I have to re-get the data.
The other bugaboo is that Yahoo adjusts ALL dates for Splits. That for me would trigger a reget of ALL data going back X years.
(Were you inferring you needed help for CBOE? In my other life I love programming and only charge $125/hr - minimum 1 hour for little jobs like that.. the high rate helps with the pain.. you know "Pain and Delight" .. posting here is the "delight" aspect of my life).
Again thanks for the URLS.. the fire has been stoked again and I love what I am seeing...
I was looking for some basic charting tools - I think I have the one that actually Yahoo! uses (data excluded) - complex stuff. To be honest, though, my big picture goal is to screen and then review the chart (and I suppose that is what most do). So charting myself isn't such a huge thing - Stockcharts is cost effective.
