Thanks for the info, and I think you made a good choice. Another charity I like is the Salvation Army.
Thanks KIK for your donation to the charity of my choice. It actually turned out to be a good project for me trying to decide which charity I should choose to be the benefactor of your generosity. I contribute to 8 or 9 different charities annually, all of them for good causes...particular favorites of mine are related to cancer treatment and research and disaster relief. But frankly, I don't normally make $500 contributions either so I decided it was worthy of some good old value research to see which ones give the most "bang for the buck". I have read that many spend way too much on fund raising and promos rather than actually helping their cause but never had taken the time to actually look into it.
I found the site "charitynavigator.org" which rates hundreds of different organizations in terms of their efficiency in gettings funds to where they should go and provides links to their websites. After looking through that, I will likely be making some changes in who I make my own charitable contributions to in the future.
As for your contest, the one I have selected is the American Red Cross. It seems appropriate since us VMCers are able to enjoy a better life thanks to our sharing information, that some of that gain is shared with those who have become victims of disasters and tragedies, often through no fault of their own. Over 94% of the ARCs funding actually gets out to help those in need too. Here is a link to the charitynavigator website. It should have the ARC address and a link to their website.
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3277
AFPC, my wild card pick, is the one that won it for me here. Ironically, KIK and I briefly talked about this one in a PM the week before the contest started. As of last thursday, investhealth partners, a foreign fund that has been a huge seller of its shares is finally out of the picture. AFPC is run by good management and I expect them to return to profitability in the near future, qualifying them for discussion on the VMC board again. I think this one is even a potential 5-10 bagger over the coming year or so but I am waiting to see some more numbers which include the results of their new 3d dental scanners out before I make that call.
Also again, many thanks to Skillz and Len for all their efforts in setting up this contest and the board.
cliffvb, post or PM me your charity
and I'll cut a check Monday for your worthy cause. An address if you have one would smooth the process for me, TIA and congratulations!
P.S. I'll have to disqualify the LenTheMan Fund and SSKBribery Fund, however....you understand.
P.P.S. Thanks for winning. That's $500 less I can lose in the market this year...:(
I forgot the first round lasted 3 weeks..."So you're saying there's a chance!" (from Dumb and Dumber)
Agreed. In a euphoric market you can throw spaghetti at the wall and a lot of it sticks. In a bad market the chances of success are less, and "keeping pace" is a much more attractive option. Additionally many players are simply unwilling to put significant DD effor into swimming upstream.
It has been said that one should never confuse a bull market with stock picking acumen.
Put THAT into your mixed metaphor pipe and smoke it!
Nsom:
Oh, I'm definitely NOT discounting the horrible market. I'm just acknowledging that (more than average) sheepishness is also a factor.
One thing I also mentioned was that BECAUSE of the horrible market, we actually may well have INCREASED sheepishness - ie people less willing to go looking for unique stocks.
So, the horrible market may work to limit the high/low range both in the sense that it restricts the upside runaway stocks AND that it means people may have been more sheepish. Either way, the market probably is the chief contributor.
Of course, we don't know if the muted high/low range will hold for the rest of the contest, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
Len
Ah, you guys are great! Good stuff to chew on.
gee--to think I started this just trying to justify being in 60th place with a smile on my face! :)
A couple comments related to the specific of your post. PSL1 was unique in a couple ways. Start with the obvious fact that Mr. Sheep had no track record before PSL1. In fact, Mr. Sheep was conceived during PSL1 (I am proud to say I was not a participant in PSL1!). His strong performance clearly led many to research, and buy into, the consensus picks of the group in later contests.
I also think that the horrible market factor should not be discounted on a behavioral level. The negative environment going into PSL8 probably diminished the effort many put in, as many players went into turtle mode. A consequence of this is that contestants find themselves with 4-5 good ideas, and are casting about to fill out their slate of picks. Sheepish stocks are very safe as your "filler" picks--a lot of other people have done the DD for you (don't forget this is a good group--Mr. Sheep has been very successful), and worst case is they allow you to keep pace with the pack. Mathematically, you can't lose big on a relative basis with really sheepish "filler" picks. Many contestants can conclude that stocks like AYSI and ZYNX, which could be predicted to be sheepish picks based on board-buzz and PSL7, look a lot more solid than your 5th best potential non-Sheepish VMC-eligible stock in a rough market.
PSL8 SHEEPISHINESS:
Ok, I consider this very interesting.
Two parter:
1) It is true that the more sheepish a PSL, the higher the probability that the range between top and bottom will be less. That's just common sense. Taking it to the extreme, if everyone owned the exact same 6 stocks, the differential would be zero. Now, make one person have one stock different. The differential is no longer zero, but close. Etc.
So, the question becomes, is PSL8 more sheepish than normal. The short answer is yes. And, because of that, it could also be contributing to (an admittedly short time frame so far) smaller spread between the best and worst.
2) The easiest way to determine the sheepishness of a particular PSL is to divide the maximum number of possible sheep points by the number of participants in the contest. In the case of PSL8, the maximum number of points you could have gotten was 92. There are 80 contestants, so the ratio is 1.15.
Just to make sure you understand (whoever YOU is), the more contestants (on average) the higher the maximum sheep number. But, lower numbers of contestants can yield higher maximum sheep numbers IF they are more sheepish. So, you can't just take the maximum sheep number and look only at it. You have to take that number with respect (divide) to the number of contestants.
Below are all eight PSL's and the maximum possible number of sheep points, the number of contestants and the ratio. As you can see clearly PSL8 is way more sheepish than average. Only PSL1 was more so and it can easily be argued that back then we weren't anywhere near as diverse of a group. Couple that with the likelihood that many who participated simply read VMC for their picks. AND, it wasn't blind! So, it's not really a representative ratio.
The question to ask now, is why is PSL8 so sheepish? I would speculate that perhaps because of the horrible market, we have a similar situation to PSL1. Many posters simply took stocks that were common on the board because they were less willing to be looking for unique stocks in a market that they may not be invested in. But, that's just speculation.

They defintiely have a nice potential niche in the markets.
I am very comfortable holding DPDW, for PSL8 and as my second largest real life position. Give it time. I like what they announced this week--hiring a controller. Frees the CFO to deal with strategic things adding long term values such as new acquisitions, uplisting, and further financing.
LOL. I'm still watching your DPDW out of the corner of my eye but want to see some more meaningful results first.
You could always hope for AYSI to report a loss and ZYNX sales #s to be under 1000.
I own neither AYSI nor ZYNX, in real life or in the contest.
I am hoping their CEOs get caught in a very compromising photo shoot involving them, vaseline, Howard Stern, Michael Jackson, dead bodies, and Mr. Sheep. And some bar-b-que sauce.
That might provide a good entry point (no pun intended, though I noticed Mr. Sheep looked around very nervously...).
Good point NSOM, maybe this will all change in a couple weeks after Q1 08 gets released by AYSI. They finally get a Q report in on the PSL:) That could swing things around one way or the other:)
And ZYNX orders probably aorund the same time.
Certainly, increased sheepishness would tend to promote a smaller standard deviation, other things equal. For the non-statistician guys there, that can be translated to "mediocre performance by the most popular stocks will glom all the sheep together close to the mean".
However, it is not just stocks with concentrated followings--those same stocks need to be neither stellar nor stinkers for that argument to hold. If AYSI was up 40% we'd see a much bigger spread than we do now.
In very non-technical terms, this is called a "cluster flock". :)
LF:
Well, if SSK doesn't beat me to it, I'll do an analysis of that supposition.
Len
Another thought is we have 2 company's stocks picked over 20 times in ports so there's maybe more sheepishness this go-round? Just a guess.
good point. By definition, this is a skewed distribution, with a tail chopped off the curve on the side less than the mean. I am guessing there is also more incentive to bail fro a stinker in the first two weeks than to trade out of one of the few winners to buck the market.
Even the leading stock, AFPC, does not have the feel of a runaway winner. I see a special situation, where a fund had to sell a big position, that offers a chance for a snap back, but we very well could see some flippers who caught the bottom bail and go lower before it comes back to a more "normal" valuation. Very different from prior contests where people just couldn't wait to catch the runaway train(s) leading the contest. (I may buy AFPC, which I owned some time ago and am familiar with, but only at lower-than-now prices if we do see a give back in the short term).
NSom:
Beat me to it. I was going to make the exact same point. The upside is limited due to the miserable market. The downside is far less than the upside since you can only lose 100%, but can gain much more - on any stock or on any group of stocks.
Len
Thanks for the stats. This confirms what my gut was telling me--that not only was the spread smaller, but it was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller.
I expect the data would indicate that the difference this contest is we don't have runaway winners on the upside, given the tough market. More precisely, there is not a specific sector or theme (i.e. China in PSL7 or Jr Miners or ???) that has bucked the general downward pressure in the markets. While contestants may have a big winner, we are not seeing someone with 4 big winners because their theme is "in". The only thing that comes to mind is the short plays. Do you have data on how many of the players in positive territory have one or more of the short indecxes in their six picks?
Just as a for instance, after 2 weeks in the last contest I had something like 2 of the top 10 stocks and 4 in the top 30, and was around 15th. This time, my best stock is 35th, I stand around 60th place, but I think I am about as close to the top in % terms as I was last contest.
SSK:
You beat me to it. I was going to do the same analysis, but figured I'd eat first. Early bird gets the worm.
Len
NSOMNIYAK, good point. In fact after the first two weeks of every PSL contest. PSL 8 has posted the lowest differential between top and bottom after two weeks. In fact the first 7 PSL averaged a 46.44% differential from top to bottom after two weeks have passed, which is almost double the PSL 8 Differential of 24.99%. We will see if this trend continues. Below is a table for your viewing pleasure. Hope this helps.
Contest Differential
PSL #1 34.55%
PSL #2 52.52%
PSL #3 33.86%
PSL #4 41.23%
PSL #5 81.99%
PSL #6 34.96%
PSL #7 45.98%
PSL #8 24.99%
what is most striking here is that there really is not that big of a spread from top to bottom.
The leaders' returns are not intimidating and the laggards' returns are not hopeless.

VMC PSL 8 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 18 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 242 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 80 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Other indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 35 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 207 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 47 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like TRGD.PK has 7 units because it was picked 7 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 433 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like ZYNX.OB is weighted much more heavily and has 24 units because it was picked 24 times in the contest. Next, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

SIRI XM Merger rumor today
"According to a headline on Briefing.com, the buzz suggested that the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission could have a decision tonight."
Siri, "Company representatives declined to comment on the speculation"
len: If absolute values are what we're looking at then you are not the best obviously:). And I may be the worst! Close anyway.
My SNS might get a little attention today. Sardar Biglari put out a letter this morning outlining how he will realize value:
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080123/new051.html?.v=32
SSK:
I'm at 8.39% and Ecoblot is 8.35%. KIK did NOT say that the winner had to be positive. I was going under the assumption that it was the absolute value. I'm feelin' I'm being set up to be robbed! What's worse, I already spent the $500 smackers!
Len
Again I reiterate what I said before, I'm playing the best man in the land this week in the tournament. I'm #7, but he's #1 and I'm going to be out of the tournament.
I'd like to see a change to the PSL tournament for the first round only. Something like you'd take the top 4 portfolios that didn't win their matchup. I'm assuming that I'd be the top portfolio that isn't winning so far. I'm pretty low beta, so I'm assuming I won't win unless Ecoblot comes back down to me.
KCLOF DD by 10 bagger IMO is a great find in the poatash space Hard to find a player in that space with anything close to a resonable PE.

Note: I will Provide at least 1 midweek update this week due to the KIK sprint. Otherwise I wouldn't be presenting this info obviously during the week. So good Luck to all that are in contention.

Judging from my crappy picks, I don't think I'll be in the running for PSL8. However, if I can somehow get just the right combination of bad earnings reports coupled with some miserable trades, I believe PSL8 'Bozo' is within my reach.
It won't be easy, but I have a good start, and the support of my family.
Best.
Bigpike-Trades
Trades are posted in the Ibox, usually as soon as the following day after they are made.
To carry it one step further, trades are kept hidden I believe, but at some point it would be interesting to know why someone is making a trade, whether they post it the next day or over the following weekend. I am interested in the thought process behind the trade.
