Bug Fix: Handling of deleted posts
If the last message on a board was a deleted one, an error message was being returned when trying to go to it.
Now if the last message has been deleted, a message is displayed to that effect and a link is given to go to the last non-deleted post for that board.
Change: Handling of deleted posts
When a post was deleted but there was a link going to it, the system would jump to the next non-deleted post for that board and not change the URL, so it looked like the non-deleted post you were reading was the deleted one.
Now if you hit a link to a post that was deleted, you get a message informing you that the post was deleted and giving you a link to the next non-deleted one.
To see it in action, try going to this deleted post: #msg-457578
Changes: iBoxes, Messages, and Preview
Most notable change is that Preview should now display embedded charts just as they'll display in messages. Let me know on #board-504 if this is not the case. If it seems to work correctly for a while, I'll work on having it treat embedded sounds the same way.
We've been having an occasional bug with iBoxes being empty when you jump to boards. I have yet been unable to make it happen consistently, so I'm hard-pressed to figure out what's causing it, let alone how to fix it. I just put a change (kludge, really) into production that should either fix the problem or help me identify one thing that isn't causing the problem. Let me know (on #board-504) if this is not the case.
While I was messing with iBoxes, I made a change to the way iBoxes and messages are processed that should (and seems to have) reduce system overhead a bit.
The technical explanation is that a function that was being called had a ton of lines and I couldn't figure out exactly what it was doing, but my guess is that it's scrolling through messages one character at a time and replacing all carriage-return/line-feeds with the HTML equivalent, "<br>". I replaced this with a new one-line function that simply has "msg=replace(msg,vbCrLf,"<br>") in it.
Let me know if messages start displaying weirdly or if any element of them is missing.
While I was at it, I changed the routine for checking to see if you've got sounds and charts toggled on or off when displaying messages. Rather than checking it (and making the necessary pair of database calls) every time you read a message, it now checks those once then remembers what you have them set to.
Let me know if the chart and sound toggles aren't working or if charts and sounds are being rendered incorrectly when you have them toggled on.
Cool. I think everyone will really like what's on the horizon for Knobias and iHub. The CEO's a former SI'er like myself and shares my mindset of "Do just one thing and do it as well as you can." That's why each of our companies has so much to offer each other and our members. I just do message boards. They don't. No overlap whatsoever, and between the two, some of the best "state of the art" in our respective areas is offered.
We (me and Knobias) are working right now on some other cool things to offer iHub members. I expect we'll start seeing some of them come to fruition next week.
Please do not post to this board. This board needs to remain an undiluted list of features and changes.
If you have any questions about features or changes, post them to #board-504 or PM them to me.
New Feature: Knobias Quotes/News/Profiles
I'm very pleased to announce that Investors Hub and Knobias have agreed to work together in key areas that are of benefit to users of both sites.
Currently, we're starting out with the simpler things, which means that as of now, boards here that are about specific stocks now contain a link below the iBox that'll pop open a new window taking you to a Knobias "Quotes and Research" page. And visitors to Knobias see a button with their quotes linking to the relevant board on Investors Hub.
I don't know how "fresh" the quotes are, but I've been very impressed with the quality of the "News" items which also contains Knobias-generated alerts for things such as noteworthy price or volume changes, block trades, new intraday highs/lows, and news from the main agencies.
This is the first of many things we are discussing doing that are of benefit to users of both sites.
Like me (and Chip from StockCharts), the CEO of Knobias is also a former SI'er.
New Feature: Boards Refresh
If you leave your browser "parked" on a specific board, it'll now refresh/reload at the same interval you have Favorites set to refresh. If you've got Auto-Refresh turned off, neither Favorites nor Board will refresh on their own.
Change: Message Filtering
Message Filtering has been disabled for non-subscribers and enabled for all subscribers. Non-subscribers can't enable filtering, although they can set up filters for later use.
This should also solve a problem with people being able to specify filters but not noticing that they're disabled by default. Now if you can use filters, they're enabled by default until you disable them.
Filler message to get past the clicking-new-posts-when-the-newest-is-deleted bug.
#msg-441220
Edit: Everyone, keep in mind this board is for me to post only. Keeps the dilution down to, oh, about zero percent. <g>
This board should only contain posts from me announcing new features and bug fixes.
#msg-441176
Filtering currently only filter out messages FROM specific people. A filter will be added later to filter out messages TO specific people, but it's pretty low on the list as I don't expect it to be used very often. The current version of filtering is only being used by about 40 people as it is.
New Feature: Message Filtering
A couple more facets of message filtering have been added.
If you've got a user filtered out, now the filtering is as complete as it's going to get. It was already filtering them out from batch mode reading, but now the system also won't list messages from them when you browse a board and will skip past their messages when you read messages one at a time.
Currently, the filtering is available to everyone. However, tomorrow I'm making it available only to subscribers, so everyone should be able to get a chance to see how it works.
There are many more kinds of filtering for me to add right now. This should only complete the public message hiding aspect. I'm not sure which aspect I'm tackling next.
Note: Filtered-out users' posts will still be visible in any of the following scenarios:
1. You click "Replies" on a message and they've written one of the replies.
2. You click on a link elsewhere that takes you directly to a message of theirs.
3. You click on the number of new posts in a board and theirs is the first unread message on that board.
4. You're a Moderator and are reading messages in the board management mode.
FYI about Subscriptions and My Interface
Until this weekend, every time you loaded any page on the site, the webserver was making a request to the database server to find out your account level and another to find out what your My Interface settings were.
It's a relatively inexpensive read, but when it's done hundreds of thousands of times per day, it adds up something fierce.
This weekend I changed it to make those calls only once per user and store the info in session variables. This way, the webserver already has that info and doesn't need to ask the database server for it. Should be noticeable performance gains.
The downside is that when you subscribe, though your account is updated appropriately in the database, the webserver often won't know about it. The same can be true of My Settings.
For that reason, if you subscribe and you still don't seem to have access to premium features, check http://www.investorshub.com/boards/my_account.asp to see if the database is aware of the change (either you subscribed via Verisign, or we manually processed your PayPal or Mail subscription), and if it shows that you're a subscriber, log out then log back in and the changes should take effect.
I just added code to make it reload the session info for My Interface when you make changes to it, but I haven't done so for the Subscription process yet. That will take a little longer, as the testing is a lot trickier.
Well, somewhat. I also just now added code to make it reload the session info for your account level when you go to the Tools menu to look at your account.
Bottom line is that for now, if you subscribe or make changes to My Interface and the change doesn't look like it "took", log out then log back in.
Change: My Accounts screen
Added field: Remaining Posts Today
If you're a non-subscriber or are on a posting restriction, you can see how many posts you have left that you can write today. This number is updated in realtime.
If you're a Subscriber or Grandfathered, the number shown will be 255 minus how many posts you've written today, but it's meaningless. Remaining Posts Today is checked at posting time for non-subscribers.
I also fixed a problem with this screen that made it show PeopleMarks for the 100 people with the highest number of peoplemarks. Now it shows the number for everyone.
It also should run faster, but I doubt it'll be noticeable on that end.
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/my_account.asp
Changes: Speed Tweaks and bug fix on Favorites
Favorites wasn't displaying the bottom menu. Now it is.
I made changes to the way read_msg.asp (the routine that reads messages one at a time) and board.asp (the routine that lists messages on a board) to make them load much smaller function libraries than they were loading. This should make a noticeable (to me) difference on CPU utilization of the webserver.
So far, so good. Utilization was around 25-30%, but now it's spending most of its time as low as 11% and as high as about 20% with occasional spikes into the low 30's.
Let me know immediately if you see weirdness with either of these routines.
Explanation of part of Message Filtering:
#msg-433184
New Feature: Message Filtering
Profiles have gained a link after the "Next 50" and "Previous 50" links. It's "Add Filter". Clicking this will add this person to the list of people whose posts you don't want to see in Batch View on boards. If you don't see that link, they're already on your list.
Also, I should point out that the "Disable" or "Enable" filtering link on the My Filters page only makes the system ignore filters. It doesn't erase your filters.
This way you can set up a bunch of filters (there will be many more) during the trading day if you like, then simply turn them off at the end of the day. If you want to enable them again later, just go to My Filters and hit the "Enable Filters" link and all your previously-entered filters will be used.
You don't have to have Filtering enabled prior to making changes to your filters. These are two completely separate functions.
New Feature: Message Filtering
We now have the beginnings of a Message Filtering system.
And I do mean "the beginnings". A lot more work went into it than is apparent from what's enabled so far, but we've got a functional part, so I'm rolling it out.
If you are a subscriber, you can block messages from specific people when you're reading messages in batch mode (aka "Next 10").
Their messages will (currently) still appear in a board's message list and when you read messages one at a time, but it's a start.
To use Message Filtering, go to the Tools screen, then select the My Filters link.
I think it'll probably be self-apparent how to use it.
Message-Filtering is intended to be a Premium feature, but non-subscribers can currently get to it to check out the interface. It has no effect for non-subscribers, though.
The little bit that's implemented so far only works in Batch mode, which is a Premium feature anyway.
Edit: Whoops! It's not all that self-apparent actually.
In the "Criteria" column enter the ID numbers of the people whose posts you wish to hide. For example, "6748" to hide my posts. "6748 2744" to hide mine and Matt's.
If you're not sure what someone's ID number is, you can go to any message to or by them and click on their name. The ID number is the last thing in the URL.
Note to all: Message-reading routine
I've just completed a batch of changes to read_msg.asp, which is the routine that reads a single message. Went from 250 lines to 190. I'd been working on it the week before I went to Vegas, so it'd already been shrunk quite a bit.
I'm still feeling pretty motivated, so I'm going to work on trimming down the function library or breaking it into pieces so that only the functions a page needs get loaded with it.
I've made a LOT of changes to the site today, so be on the looking for bugs. I'd especially like to hear about them tonight instead of tomorrow when everyone's here and the bugs are causing them problems using the site.
Note to all: Board routine
I just finished a lot of changes to board.asp, which is the routine that's called when you click on a board name and it lists the messages in it.
Look for bugs. This one's bound to have plenty of them, as there were a LOT of changes. I don't have any idea yet just how much the changes will impact speed, though.
Note to all: Favorite Page
I just did a pretty substantial rewrite of the code for Favorites, which included streamlining it from 330 lines of code to 192, changing the way a lot of the processing is done, and optimizing the queries that drive it.
It *should* run quite a bit faster and, more importantly, since it's the second most frequently hit page on the site, should relieve the webserver of a noticeable amount of loading, helping everything to run faster.
Since this was an almost complete rewrite, look for bugs. I haven't found any yet, but that doesn't mean much.
Also, some of you have reported still seeing a pause (someone reported that it's as much as 2-3 seconds?!?) between the loading of the Boards list and the People list on that page.
Let me know if that pause has gone away. I didn't find anything that looked particularly like a culprit for that aside from some query/index tuning for both lists. Well, I take that back. I had the table names reversed in the INNER JOIN used for the People list, and for all I know, that might've been exactly what was causing the delay.
Note to all:
I'm tweaking the Favorites routine right now and one thing I noticed is that auto-refresh was set On by default. I just changed the default to Off, but since I'm sure it's set On for a lot of people who couldn't care less (and it's a tiny bit expensive, especially if not needed), I just set it Off for everyone.
If you want auto-refresh turned on, you'll need to go back to the Tools menu select My Settings and turn it back on.
Bug Fix: Keep/Unkeep
When I added user-configuration of batch sizes for the Next 10 function, I broke the Keep/Unkeep functionality in batch-reading mode. That's fixed now.
Keep/Unkeep was still working when reading messages one at a time.
Correction/Clarification:
Viewing Profiles is not a Premium feature. I finally realized where I got that from. It's that way on SI. Old habits die hard.
Batch-viewing of a member's messages is a Premium feature, though.
Bob, talking about "wild", as you go further down in the list of messages the size of the title (the thread name) increases until it fills the whole screen, a software glitch, I presume...
Wow! That was bizarre. I tried different browsers, until I found it would do it in old versions of Netscape.
It's fixed now.
Big new Feature: Batch Reading By Author
I've just implemented a feature that will be a part of our Message-Filtering system.
If you go to a person's Profile (by clicking their name in a post), you'll see an option that says "Read Last 50 Messages". Clicking this will take you to the complete text of their most recent 50 messages, regardless of the board on which they were written.
There will be many improvements to it, such as making the "50" user-definable by matching it up with the "Batch View" configuration item that was added last night, and making it possible to jump through all of their messages, one batch at a time. Basically, it'll get all of the features that "Next 10" while reading boards currently has.
If you would like to respond to one of the messages shown in the list, click inside the white "message number" box in the message and hit Enter. That takes you directly to the message, and from there you can hit Respond.
The formatting is not finalized, so don't give me any grief about it.
The only potential weirdness I can think of for you to look out for is anything odd within that routine itself. It's a completely new routine and has nothing to do with any other routines.
Enjoy!
Oh, forgot the most important part. Since Profile viewing is supposed to be a Premium Feature (it wasn't working that way, but I changed it), this feature is also Premium. As such, only Subscribers will be able to see or use it.
non-deleted filler
Everyone, please don't post messages to this board. It's supposed to be an undiluted list of nothing but changes to the site.
If you need to ask me about something I've posted here, find me in #board-504
Thanks
Filler message because I deleted the previous two and it was causing problems.
On SI and IHUB you have to get the next one and then the rest.
Is there really any reason for this?
SI, RB, and iHub are basically just copies of the old BBSes, and it was always one at a time. Or that was the default. I can't really remember if we had 10 at a time.
Personally, I usually read one at a time.
New Feature: User-definable Message Batch Sizes
Everyone can see a "Next 10" link on messages, but only subscribers can use them. Well, now it's not fixed at "Next 10". And I'm going to call it "Batch View" since 10 isn't a fixed number anymore.
By going to the Tools menu, then selecting My Settings and going to the bottom, you'll see a new option that lets you specify how many messages at a time you want to read in this mode. You can choose 10, 20, 50, or 100.
This number can be configured by anyone, subscriber or not, but the "Next nn" mode still only works for subscribers.
Enjoy.
And let me know in #board-504 if you encounter any problems with it.
Tweaks:
I've made a number of changes to the routines for the Favorites page and the one that is used when you read messages one at a time. This was done in the interest of speed. Specifically, reducing the workload for the servers.
I'll be continuing to make changes on those pages for the next few weeks, so let me know immediately if something looks amiss on them.
New Feature: Board shorthand & SI Thread shorthand
Now instead of using the whole URL to give a link to a board, you can use #board, followed by a hyphen, then the number of the board.
For example, #board-504 works the same as http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=504
Works the same, but prettier and easier to type if you're typing them instead of cut/pasting them.
Also, I've added shorthand for specifying threads on Silicon Investor. Rather than using the whole URL, use #thread, followed by a hyphen, followed by the number of the thread.
Change: Chairmail Processing
When sending Chairmail, email addresses using incorrect syntax (spaces, etc) won't cause processing to stop. Instead, these addresses are skipped.
There shouldn't be any potential problems to look for with this one, unless you find that there's an error condition I'm not testing for that causes Chairmail processing to abort with an error message.
New Feature: SI message shorthand
In addition to the #msg shorthand you can use for posts on Investors Hub, now if you use #reply shorthand like SI does, the resulting link will be to a post on SI.
For example:
This should go to an iHub post: #msg-402833
This should pop up a new window for an SI post: #reply-17700960
Minor change:
The number of members and posts shown on the homepage are now calculated/displayed in realtime.
The homepage has also gained a realtime list of the 10 most recent subscribers.
Investors Hub New Features Update
It's been a while since we've brought our community up to speed on changes to the site, so we figured it's about time to do so. Since Bob came aboard in January, he's been busy adding all kinds of new features to the site and constantly tweaking it for better performance. Not only has this resulted in some cool stuff for Investors Hub, it has the arguably greater benefit of having kept him off the streets.
First, this is going to be a long message, so we recommend keeping it for a while as a reference to help you "Find The Features".
Unless otherwise designated, all of these features are available to all members of the site.
1. My Account screen. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/my_account.asp
Go here to see what account level you have (Registered/Limited, Lifetime Subscriber, etc), your subscription expiration date, and how many people have added a PeopleMark to you. Active Peoplemarks is the number of people who have Peoplemarked you and have also posted at least once in the past 30 days.
New/Unapproved: you can post 3 times per day to stock-specific boards until your email address has been checked and your posts reviewed to make sure you're really here to be civil about stock discussions.
Registered/Limited: the same limitations apply, but you can post a lot more frequently.
Grandfathered or Subscriber: You have unlimited posting privileges and access to many features not available with the other two account levels.
Note, if you'd like to upgrade to this level, visit http://www.investorshub.com/boards/subscribe.asp
2. My Settings screen. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/my_settings.asp
This is something pretty unique to websites. Use this screen to customize some key aspects of your Investors Hub experience. Elements such as whether or not to display embedded pictures or play embedded sounds when reading messages. A popular feature on this page is the "Favorites Auto-Refresh". If you toggle this on, your Favorites page refreshes itself at the interval you specify, making it easier to stay on top of new posts.
3. My Interface screen. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/my_css.asp
We think this feature goes beyond unique. With it, you have an amazing level of control over much of the look and feel of the site.
For example, if you spend a lot of time on the site, so the white background is tiring for your eyes, go here to change it to something else. Or if you'd like the menu bar to look more like buttons and/or display in a different font and/or color, here's where you change it.
For a more thorough explanation of this feature, go to #msg-336778.
4. Public Message Archiving (Subscribers Only)
If you're reading a public message that was written to you, a link appears that says "Keep". This is used so you can keep track of a message for future reference.
5. Preview/SpellCheck
Everyone has access to to the Previewer but SpellCheck only works for Subscribers. What this does is display a message the way it'll appear when posted, complete with formatting and the same word-wrapping. If you're a Subscriber, your message is also SpellChecked and any words in error are highlighted.
6. Top Boards http://www.investorshub.com/boards/top_boards.asp
Use this screen to see which boards on Investors Hub are the largest, most active, and most widely watched since the site's inception. The "Score" is a proprietary formula that takes into account total and recent posting activity and the number of people actively watching the board. This screen updates in realtime.
7. Full-Text Search (Subscribers Only)
With this feature, you can search posts in specific boards, by specific people, or across the entire site to find the posts containing any word(s) you're looking for. The most recent 50 posts meeting your criteria are returned regardless of the age of the posts.
8. Message Shorthand
When linking to another Investors Hub message in a post you're writing, you don't need the full URL. Instead, use #msg followed by a hyphen and the number of the message. For example, #msg-372523
9. Premium Features
There are a number of subscriber-only features the site has that you might not be aware of, whether or not you're a subscriber. These include ad-free viewing throughout the site, the ability to send and receive Private Messages, and the ability to read posts 10 at a time, which can be quite a time-saver. For more details, see http://www.investorshub.com/boards/about.asp for more details.
New Feature:
On stock-specific boards for OTCBB companies, there is now a link at the bottom of the iBox that says "Company Profile".
If you click it, it'll take you to DimGroup's profile for the company along with quotes. I think the quotes are as of the last close.
DimGroup approached us recently about wanting to shut down their message boards and redirect their message board traffic here, I checked them out, liked the depth of the information I saw for stocks, and decided to add the Company Profile links here.
New Feature: Message Shorthand
We now have a shorthand way of linking to other messages on the site.
Just use #, followed by "msg-", followed by the message number. The message number is the last part of the URL for any message, after the "message_id=" part of the URL.
For example:
#msg-372523
is shorthand for
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=372523
Either one provides a link to message 372523, but the former is nicer-looking, easy to type and opens the link in the current window rather than making it open a new window.
Have fun, and, as always, let me know if you encounter any weirdness with this feature or that you think might be getting caused by this feature.
Note to any who were keeping their MailBox sizes down as a favor:
You shouldn't need to anymore. Huge MailBoxes used to be a real killer for the whole site. If someone had a few hundred messages saved, the server's usage would spike every time they hit the MailBox link.
Shouldn't be the case anymore. Keep all the messages you want.
Major change:
Well, hopefully it'll seem a relatively insignificant change on the interface side of things, but it was major behind the scenes.
I just completed the following changes to the MailBox page:
1. It's all CSS'd now, which means it'll use the Message Box Color (settable on the My Interface page under the Tools menu) for odd-numbered rows.
2. Kept messages now have a link to UnKeep them from the MailBox page.
3. Alignment issues addressed.
4. You can now specify on the My Settings screen how many of each type of message to display on your MailBox page. The new field is called "Messages Per Category in MailBox". Pick a number from the dropdown and that's the maximum that will display for each of the 3 categories in your MailBox. Smaller numbers make the page load faster and bigger numbers make more messages available.
All in all the page should load a lot faster now anyway. It went from 308 lines of code down to 128, and the data being sent over the wires dropped by 1/3rd, mostly because of the CSS conversion, and all the SQL statements being replaced by one stored-procedure call.
Instead of 3 main on-the-fly queries, each of which called another subquery once for each message, it is all being fed now by one stored procedure. That's the part that should result in the biggest speed increase.
An additional minor change is that I widened the table on the My Settings screen so it'd look better.
As always, drop me a line if you see any weirdness.
Minor bug fix:
If you hit Submit/Arc when replying to a PM, the top menu now accurately reflects the new MailBox count. Previously the bottom menu was but the top menu wasn't.
Minor change to the latest feature:
You can now tell the site to only "alert" you when new messages to you are written. To do so, select "Messages To Me Only" from the dropdown for the "Alert Browser Window" setting.
New posts in boards you've got boardmarked will still show up. The browser just won't alert you when they do unless the posts are written to you.
New feature:
The My Settings screen (under the Tools menu) has gained a new option called "Alert Browser Window On New Messages".
If you toggle this to "On" (the default is "Off"), anytime you get a new message in your MailBox or a new post is made on one of your BoardMarked boards, the system will either flash the browser's button in your taskbar or pop the browser window into the foreground, depending on the operating system you're using.
I use XP, and it flashes the taskbar button and turns it orange. Apparently in other operating systems, it brings the Investors Hub window to the foreground, which is definitely not what I would want personally. So you can turn it on or off in the My Settings screen.
This setting is meaningful, and the focus adjustment happens only if you also have "Favorites Auto-Refresh" set to "True".
Minor bug fixes:
After you send a PM, now you get menus on your "Your message was sent" screen.
I also wasn't getting all the appropriate session variables cleared after sending messages, which I've fixed. Keep your eyes open for any strange activity when posting messages, especially when using Preview, since it relies the most on these variables.
What I'm most worried about happening is Previewing a message, then clicking the "Edit Message" button and getting your message blanked. It didn't do that to me in testing, but that used to be a problem and I want to make sure it doesn't become one again.
Bug fix and minor change:
Fixed the bug that was causing an error message if you did a full-text search and no results were found.
Also changed it to require a minimum of 2 characters instead of 3.
Some features removed from Free access:
The following features that're either really cool or really resource-intensive are no longer available to anyone but Subscribers and Grandfathered Subscribers:
Full-text Search
Spell-Check
Public Message Archiving
If you're not a subscriber, the Preview button will still work and should still display your message just like it'll appear when posted, but your text isn't run through the spell-checker.
Also, if you're not a subscriber, the "Keep" buttons don't show up on public messages addressed to you.
Next on the chopping block will be Interface Customization. This includes the "My Settings" and "My Interface" options of the Tools menu. It's not going away immediately, though. Not until I get things set up that'll allow a limited-time preview of all of these features for new members.
Spell-Check is a bit of a burden on the servers, and Full-Text Searching is a major one, which has been getting used a LOT for the past month or so. I'm seeing response times of 2-4 seconds on it, which isn't acceptable, so it's looking very likely that I'll write one from scratch to replace what SQL Server has built in.
In the case of Public Message Archiving, I just think it's one of those really neat things (does any other site offer it? Not that I know of.) that I like having as a reason to subscribe. After all, ads that nobody clicks don't pay the bills. <g>
Minor Bug Fix:
I noticed tonight that when you Preview a reply to a public message, the top menu was being displayed twice. It looks like that bug has been in there at least since I added "My Interface", and possibly has been there since Preview first went in.
I only use Preview when I'm stuck on the spelling of a word, so this one slipped by me for an awfully long time.
The feature that lets you Keep public messages in a sort of separate inbox now has a name. It's now called "Public Message Archiving". I'm posting this message here just as a kind of explanation of what Public Message Archiving means on the "Upgrade" page so Matt will know what to write when he does up the popup explanation for that feature (you listening, Matt?).
