Oddly, though there's a pretty big Jewish population nearby, there aren't a lot of Jewish delis, which I find incomprehensible. I know of only ONE, and it's not great. I don't get it. Probably there are some good ones in the city.

There're so MANY good delis in New York. All kinds of smoked fish, and of course deli meats like pastrami and corned beef and smoked tongue. WONDERFUL sandwiches.

When I was in college, I sometimes borrowed a friend's car--only seniors could have cars, and there were very limited parking permissions--and drove a few other friends to Jack & Marion's in Brookline. it was fabulous! Gigantic sandwiches with multiple kinds of meat. It was HEAVEN!! And open late, so we usually went around eleven at night. The place was still pretty packed.

And we ended up taking half our sandwiches home. Two slices of rye, and about two pounds of meat.

Sadly, Jack & Marion's went out of business long ago.

There should be Jewish delis EVERYWHERE.

I have limited 'sperients in Filly, butt if you haven't bought smoked sable from a local Jewish deli, find some place that sells it. Or take the train to NYC and gett some. Life is too short to be lived without smoked sable.

Lots of places in Baltimore and Montgomery Counties to buy smoked sable. It goes unsmoked as “black cod” at fancy fish places and smoked sable is called “revelation” here in Maryland where crab cakes and Old Bay are far more common...

By far, it is one of my favorite delicacies but I am too cheap to buy it at 50 bucks/pound.

But Costco has a great price for cryopacked whole smoked whitefish, $8.50/lb vs $15.50/lb at Wegmans for the identical product. And Costco sells a bundle of two 12 oz packages of lox for just 20 bucks.

And BTW, shaj, you should definitely download the i-Shiva app for potentially locating free smoked sable anytime and anywhere in your travels.
