Oddly, though there's a pretty big Jewish population nearby, there aren't a lot of Jewish delis, which I find incomprehensible. I know of only ONE, and it's not great. I don't get it. Probably there are some good ones in the city.
There're so MANY good delis in New York. All kinds of smoked fish, and of course deli meats like pastrami and corned beef and smoked tongue. WONDERFUL sandwiches.
When I was in college, I sometimes borrowed a friend's car--only seniors could have cars, and there were very limited parking permissions--and drove a few other friends to Jack & Marion's in Brookline. it was fabulous! Gigantic sandwiches with multiple kinds of meat. It was HEAVEN!! And open late, so we usually went around eleven at night. The place was still pretty packed.
And we ended up taking half our sandwiches home. Two slices of rye, and about two pounds of meat.
Sadly, Jack & Marion's went out of business long ago.
There should be Jewish delis EVERYWHERE.
