Smoltz essentially turned down Atlanta because Boston was offering more money too.
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/articles/2009/01/14/smoltz_braves_always_assumed_he_wouldnt_leave/
ATLANTA—John Smoltz returned to Atlanta on Wednesday to make it clear he'll always cherish the city that has been his home since 1988.
"Twenty-two years is a long time and I don't think you ever take it for granted and I never will," he said.
But the pitcher said Braves management took him for granted this offseason, and that helped push him to accept a $5.5 million, one-year contract from the Boston Red Sox as he recovers from major shoulder surgery.
"They had a plan," Smoltz said of the Red Sox, "and the plan here was, 'We just always assumed he wouldn't leave.'"
The 41-year-old Smoltz was back in Atlanta one day after his first news conference in Boston. He said the offers between the Braves and Red Sox were "not even close" and said the performance bonuses that pushed the potential value of Atlanta's offer close to $10 million "were impossible" to reach.
"In all my greatest accomplishments, I couldn't have reached what they were talking about," he said. "It sounds good. The numbers sound good. It sounds like, 'Oh, they're close. Why would he leave?'"
Smoltz said "we wouldn't be having this discussion" if the Braves' offer had been close to Boston's.

It's fairly tough to do. I guess if you want to pay to not play, even then the union would probably fight it.
The Red Sox had a weight clause in Curt Schilling's contract where they could weigh him a certain number of times during the season and if he was under a certain weight, he'd get a bonus. They could not void his contract if he was over the weight. Essentially you can not penalize a player for being overweight but you can give them an incentive to be in shape. In some instances, I think it is a good thing for the club to do.
You call showing up in normal playing weight condition performance?
Uhhhh, I don't think I ever said that.
Weight clauses are essentially performance bonuses in MLB. Baseball has a complicated process for that, but I don't think you can just cut a player.
Except the Yankees gave those players big salaries and multi-year deals while the Red Sox are doing incentive laden contracts with a minimal base salary for only 1 year.
Colon came into the Red Sox fat, lazy, and barely motivated....everything that Smoltz is not! :)
No, I haven't listened to it yet.
I'm just saying Moyer may not have the energy to continue that long, not even mentioning the age or if he still has the ability. But if his goal is ultimately have a chance for 300 wins, he'd better be ready to pitch 5 more seasons.
Mussina is even closer with 270 wins and is younger! Mussina was at a point that it would have taken him at least 2, maybe even 3 and years and he didn't have the energy to commit to it.
It would more than likely take Moyer 5 years to get 300 wins. I don't care about the wins, I'd just like to see some guy at 50 still pitching in MLB! Getting 300 wins would truly be a Spartan feat, especially at age 5. It'd just be a bonus at that point.
Awesome! Glad it is not a premium channel which requires a subscription. I despise the NFL network and the Thursday night games. I have no interest in watching those games and even less interested in having the NFL channel on the cable network.
It will be nice to see Harold Reynolds and his analysis on a regular basis. I'm really interested to see how their coverage compares to ESPN's Baseball Tonight. I'm pretty stoked about it it and the coverage they'll be able to provide. :)
This isn't just a chess move by the Yankees, it's a power move! It will be really difficult for the Red Sox to counter what they have done this off season, not just this year, but for the next couple of years! The lineup in Boston is weaker without Manny, and there is no one on the market that can add power. At least Arod, Jeter, Damon, Matsui, Posada, and the robot Rivera are past their prime.
Having Swisher at 1B never made any sense to me. If Teixeira is indeed going to the Yankees, the club handled this one really well. Of course they probably were going to offer more money than anyone else would. Yankees are still continuing their spending ways, but Cashman appears to be making the decisions now. This time around they're signing players that have talent and are still actually in their prime! Talk about scary.
Hope Tampa Bay fans enjoyed their one year at the top of the division, it is not going to happen again in the next several years.
Agree. If Epstein came out and said it, I'd think a bit differently. They're still in the chase.
Henry: 'We are not going to be a factor' for Teixeira

Red Sox owner John Henry e-mailed several media members late tonight with a stunning twist in the team's pursuit of free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.
Henry's words: "We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."
Earlier tonight, multiple news outlets reported the Red Sox had traveled to Texas to meet with Teixeira and his agent, Scott Boras, in the hopes of trying to finalize a deal. WCVB-TV Channel 5 reported that the Red Sox had offered Teixeira an eight-year deal worth $184 million (an average of $23 million per season).
Five teams have been in the hunt for Teixeira to some extent -- the Sox, Angels, Yankees, Orioles, and Nationals -- and all indications had been pointing to the Red Sox as the frontrunners.
Earlier this week, Henry had expressed concern about granting a player a contract of eight years or more.
"We all have limits," he wrote the AP on Wednesday. "Eight years is a very long time in baseball and everywhere else."
He also said the amount the team is willing to spend on a free agent "depends on both" the economy and the player being sought.
"Baseball as a whole has not yet been hit by the financial crisis, but it will," Henry said. "The degree is in question and won't be answered for a while."
Additionally, Henry wrote in an e-mail to the Herald that the Red Sox would not give a 10-year contract to any free agent.
Teixeira hit .308 with 33 homers and 121 RBIs last season, including .358 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 54 games with the Angels.
Think he prefers playing in the NL.
Hey, at least Sabathia didn't say it was a dream come true to be in a Yankee uniform!
I know how some computer problems can be really difficult to fix.....I recommend just learning french at this point!
Hope to be of some help and good luck! :)
He's listed as an outfielder on the roster right now. Not too much power for a first basemen. I guess the Yankees will have to scrap by with what they got. ;)
I'm afraid with the current members on the team, that they could use the waterboy and do just fine!
Who is the starting first basemen for the Yankees in 09'?
What are you going to do to change it? Are we going to institute price controls, be socialist, and make the the players play for little to nothing? Lets put a cap on how much they can sell tickets for too. You've complained about it for quite a while but I haven't seen any solutions.
It's not an issue of right or wrong. I'm all for the market determining how baseball and individual clubs run their operation. Since 1998, attendance has averaged well over 70 million and it was nearly 80 million the last couple of years. People aren't running away from the game as you make it out to be. You may differ, but just because the sport is success doesn't make it bad. There are 'purists' who probably don't like the wild card or any other changes baseball has instituted in the last couple of decades.
I don't live close to any pro teams, yet that has never hurt my interest in the sport. A kid doesn't have to attend a game to like the sport or strive to make it. I'd like to know how often many of the current players coming into the sport actually attended any games, I bet it is fewer than you think.
The fundamental problem you perceive in the sport is nothing new. How about taking a look at what happened with the NHL and relate it to us how baseball is is a similar predicament to what they were several years ago. I don't think baseball has a big of problem as you make it out to be.
Baseball is actually still cheaper to attend than any of the other major sports.
Know what happens when spending goes beyond what people are buying? Look all around you at the results.
It's not as simple as you put it.
Then you have problems, baseball hasn't had that problem.
This isn't the housing cycle it is a game that once was as American as Apple pie!
It's a sport that is also run as a business and must basically follow the rules of any other business to continue its operations.
Sorry to break this to you but I'm old school being someone that loves and respects the game.
Players, Agents, Owners, are ruining it.
How is the sport being ruined and different to any other sport or business for that matter?
Your response is to look at revenues.
Well, the amount of revenue does correlate to how popular the sport is and also much the players are going to receive as salary. It appears to be a fairly healthy business operation at the moment.
As revenues increases, player salaries will increase.
If revenue decreases, player salaries will decrease.
Baseball revenues have doubled since 2000. As long as the fans spend on the sport, so will the owners.
Correct, Genske is CC's agent. I just assumed. Either way, the agent was just doing his job.
owners who throw money at players so they don't have to WORK at becoming a winner.
I would only consider one team to be in that category. No other teams can afford it nor are willing to spend as much as them.
It's like looking at purchasing a vehicle. Why would you agree on the first price offered by the dealer? Maybe you're not interested in purchasing a vehicle from one dealership, but like the price offered to get a better deal at another dealership on another car. Maybe Boras is orchestrating that CC doesn't want to play in New York to get the price up further.
Boras and CC are in a leveraged position against the Yankees and can use it to full advantage. I said that Cashman has meet with CC 3 times in the last several days, and that shows a little more interest than just saying he would rather play for a west coast team. Great job by Boras once again.
Got it working.
Got it working.
Cashman and Sabathia may have actually meet 3 times in the last several days. That is fairly significant if true.
Why would you commit with a response early in the process with a yes or no when the decision requires knowing much more than wht money is being offered. There's no reason to burn a bridge early in the process or hurt your chances to maximize your potential earnings with a team you're more interested in playing for. Boras knows what he's doing and is handling the process just as you'd expect him too.
I don't think CC being up to the task is hardly the problem.
My brother just build a computer and is having a slight problem.
Just sent me this:
well im having problems with updating the bios on my LANPARTY DK X38-T2R mother board. Ive downloaded the first link on this webpage...

and it runs into a disk error when i attempt to boot from the floppy.
He build a computer and there is a slight issue with his networking card and it was recommended to solve the problem this way from this link: (2nd paragraph after the pic) http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-graphics-overclocking,2083-6.html
He used my graphics card and it booted into the bios ok, we're just having trouble going from there. Any help would be appreciated!
Maddux took less money to play for another team over 10 years ago. Didn't seem to hurt him or anyone else. It's not worth the money to play in a city like New York for a few.

Cool! Then I thought Ozzie did it after him during Fans v. Favorites, right?
I don't think Yau Man made any idol, it was Ozzie.
The immunity idol that was found at the dinner was put around the bottle, it could not fit in it since it was a necklace. If they put it on the bottle, I wonder if it would have came off when they threw it out further into the water. I thought someone was going to find it later during the day if it came back to the beach. It does make sense if Marcus put it in is back pocket, I don't think anyone would have noticed. It will be very interesting to see what happens! As far as we know, maybe Bob will make another fake one and get Corinne or someone else bumped out using it!
If Randy was smart, he should have had Bob give him the "immunity idol" at tribal council. The other group may have known about the ruse, but it could have thrown a few of them off and caused them to switch their vote and sparing Randy. I don't know if Bob really wants Randy around either for that matter.
This is another great season of Survivor! I, too, was expecting some of the food to be some sort of bugs at the reward challenge as the contestants were, and of course there was nothing! If there ever was a season to play on, this would be the one I'd like! They have not had to swim at all in the challenges and they have not had to eat and sort of bad grub.
The few times I've heard Mussina interviewed on some programs, he seems like a guy who carefully ponders a decision and will stick to it once the decision is made. We won't see him back. He probably see how much work it is for Randy to reach the 300 mark and decided that is more than he wants to commit to. While I'm not a Yankee fan, I'll never forget his concentration and determination on the mound, especially in the playoffs. He is one player that is to be admired.
...and I don't think it matters what Francona says. The GM is responsible for the players put on the field. As much as Theo, Francona, and company probably didn't like to see Coco go, they did gain some needed strength in the bullpen which never hurts!
Oh yea, I would have been happy platooning like he did in Boston! :)
I just broke the news to my wife, that was her favorite player on the team too! :(
I sure don't think so.
Crisp is a great player and still is! Crisp wants to play full time and the Red Sox are willing to use their players in the farm system and sign free agents where needed. With Bay and Drew signed in the corners and Ellsbury as a CF, they're looking pretty good! Ellsbury is still learning and has a lot of upside!
Good caliber relievers are very difficult to get, and expensive on the free agent market! This helps the team. Personally, I would have liked to see Crisp stay with the team! But you can't have a guy making the money he does as the platoon man.
Yea, it is pretty amazing how ignorant some players, even coaches are of some rules. It is great seeing teams and players make smart moves on the field in situations that do not happen too often.
Somebody should have told McNabb that if they tied in the playoffs, both teams advance to the next round and both teams play against the opponent. Probably would have initially believed it.
