Shutting down randomly for no apparent reason. Saw tons of errors in log event related to mobo and stuff but Asus didn't really do anything to fix it. I am in Croatia now till June so will deal with it when I get back.
maybe its meant for beer? Just wondering out loud an it is still early morning here ...
Thanks Flo but I am so damn lazy that I just did it on the Win8 machine after search of settings (gee the TOSH is all the way downstairs in the basement :). In future I must remember to try finding an answer to a question before asking it here as I found the computer name change page on WIN* right after posting my question. duh.
If this computer name change works I see that it could eliminate 80-85% of error messages. I still have some ESENT 37 error messages but they are not critical and only constitute about 5-10% of errors.
I am not overly optimistic this has anything to do with random shutdowns but at least it does not hurt to fix the problems that can be fixed.
I still think that the BIOS needs to be updated but in Device Manager all drivers say they are the latest and best. On the ASUS website I have not been able to find any appropriate updates for this machine.
Thanks again

How do I change the name of the computer in the Toshiba Vista premium computer?
thanks
Looking at Event Log I still see a lot of errors and warnings but at least they are not critical anymore - yet. The most common one is <EVENT ID 4321 Source NetBT>. I googled this and it says something about renaming computer as there is some kind of conflict.
Sorry to take up so much room with this crap that should not even exist in the first place.
(sigh)
ASUS nightmare continues. ASUS laptop was returned for second time via Best Buy and this time they just reset the os to factory settings, which is what I did the first time I dealt with their online troubleshoot.
Best Buy is basically washing their hands of the whole thing and telling me go to complain to ASUS if the service is not satisfactory. Nice attitude. Anyway I will contact ASUS and see what happens. If all else fails I will have to try fixing it myself. Needless to say that if we get to that ASUS and BEST BUY will be on my blacklist (and that of all my cult followers) forevermore and well assured of never ever seeing my credit card number again.
ROFLMFAO
For you pretty easy but for me --- damn FLO has to repeat the same question three different ways before I finally get it already!!!
Enjoy ..
MACs are too expensive for me and learning a whole new culture just not worth it for me, but I am the first to agree that if you are young and do a lot of creative stuff MACs are probably WAY better.
jmho
Reboot often best easy solution to some of these weird manifestations.

Back-up question.
On my Win Vista Toshiba I have two huge backup files (BR-100817-01 dated JAN15 2009) and BR-100817-00 that include brexpert.exe in ech one that amount to over 65GB. Can I copy those to my peripheral hd and then delete them?
thanks

I think I had put them all on a WD Book periperal hd a long time ago and just never thought to delete them from the computer hd. Duh. Dang I didn't even realize how little I had left of free space on C Drive: DOUBLE DUH!!
Honestly I don't really care as they are old pics and videos of yesteryear of no relevance today.
What I hear is that once the RAM can't take care of live mem requirements the hard drive swap file is used to create artificial mem to assist the live memory. Something like that anyway.
All I had to do was get rid of all pics and videos on my user account and all of a sudden I had half the hd back -- like 65GB woohoo! -- now it kicks a$$ again weeee!
While waiting for ASUS to come back from shop or not, I am cleaning my XP computer. To my horror I see that it has all of 7GB left out of 150GB. No wonder it is so slow. I am reoving some programs but that will never give back enough room. I share this computer with someone else and I almost never use it myself. Anyway I can delete all my files and my user account to give mor eroom to othet other user? Withoutout formatting drive and starting all over which is prolly the only real solution.
Abx beating today and Friday reaching new ten year lows
Thanks Newly you are probably right on the money regarding it being a mobo problem. When I Google some the many errors and warnings in event log they point to a defective mobo ... The computer went back to Asus yesterday and the Geek Squad guy did take out the battery and made notes on work file. Thanks again.
Thank you very much for all your effort to help me with this problem. I will let you know how it works out.
Cheers!
I changed it to BALANCED RECOMMENDED but doubt it will help very much.
Power4GEAR high Performance ... maybe balanced would be better
Thanks everybody for your comments and patience. Please rest assured that I am learning a lot here.
:)
This looks like what I am going thru ...
I hadn't looked at the event log in a week (waiting for a whole unit replacement - and have been for 3 weeks now, still no sign of shipping), right now it seems littered with "A multi-touch device reported inconsistent contact information." errors, the dptfpolicy... error, and I'm getting a ton of ESENT errors complaining data is taking an abnormally long time to be written. Windows claims this is likely indicative of a hardware problem. But yeah. My event log looks kind of catastrophic, the number of errors I'm seeing.
At least I have a good idea of what is wrong now. The big crazy mystery is gone. I was going to contact ASUS online but I think I will go straight back to the store with a copy of events log (thanks again Flo for that eye opener).
I am scared shitless updating BIOS as I am still an insecure newby who could easily wreck this new computer forevermore.
I am close to that right now even though I am basically a wimp.
The more I research the log events as suggested by Flo the more I see that for some reason this brand new computer is in need of bios and SSD updates (and who knows what else).
I resent having to update a brand new machine.
Looks like you may be on to something here about updates. Looks like mobo needs update as well as SSD:
DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION is very common if you have a Solid State Drive (SSD) in Windows 8. Many SSDs can’t handle Windows 8 correctly until you update the firmware on the drive. Firmware means memory and code on the device itself that controls it. The newer the firmware, the more likely it is to handle something new. (For example, if you own a Blu-Ray player, odds are you’ve updated it at least once through the Internet. That’s firmware.)
To update the firmware of your SSD, you first need to retrieve the model number.
Press Windows Key + X to bring up the Power User menu
Click Control Panel
Click System when viewing by Small Icons
Click Device Manager
Click the arrow next to Disk Drives
Record the model number and Google it along with the word “firmware”
Looks like it could be a motherboard issue. Interesting as the guy at best buy said he thought it could be that. Wonder why he didn't go look at log events.
Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power Event ID 37:
The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 423 seconds since the last report.
I suspect that your motherboard has problems, may be in the power supply models. Please upgrade BIOS, also check if there is any motherboard related drivers in Dell website. If it does not help, contact Dell support to check hardware issues.
Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. ”
Wow there is tons of errors. Here are some -- can you decipher any of this? Computer shut itself off around 11:15 pm
Thanks!

I know for sure everything is up-to-date software wise. will check logs
Thanks
That's would be quite possible except that it happened also before I brought it to the store for warranty repair. You may be right though about last night. Easy way to find out is to try and shut it down now and see what happens (no updates going on now).
In any case it doesn't tell me why this pos is shutting down suddenly for no apparent normal reason. Overheating is usually the culprit but it does not seem to be the case. I will mention it and maybe they will replace the fan just to shut me up.
:(
I found out after buying Win8 that Win7 is available if you buy a business version of a computer in a store. I wanted Win7 too but the person who bought me this computer INSISTED on getting Win8. My fault for not sticking to my guns. At the time Win7 was not available for regular consumers but I see that you can still buy WIN7 loaded computers if you go to the business repertoire of a computer store like Best Buy, Future Shop or Staples.
I guess if it is a WIN8 issue it would almost be worthwhile buying WIN7 at Tigerdirect for $100 to salvage this computer, though I would much rather get a refund and buy something else or just NOTHING.
Best Buy guy says there is no overheating problem so I am ....
I use Malawarebytes every day and it was fine for the whole week till shut down last night. Don't you think that not being able to shut down computer through power icon is significant? Is that a Win8 issue? If it is ASUS will say not our problem but a MSFT issue. I hope Best Buy does something about it in that case other wise I will be sool
Well got ASUS i5 with Windows 8 back from manufacturer and they claimed to have replaced hd even though Best Buy said it was fine before sending it. All was fine for a week so I thought that I could finally enjoy my new computer. I even got a new license key for ASC6 Pro. After checking malawarebyte version late last night the computer suddenly shut down.
I was not too surprised as it seemed to be churning away needlessly after having been on sleep mode for a few hours.
When I went to shut it down via the POWER icon in the "charms" the computer just froze and would not shut down. I had to do it manually with the power button. I remember when I last brought the computer in that it had frozen when I had tried to shut it down (I always use sleep mode so never noticed till now that this option was screwy.)
Is this a Win8 issue or a hardware issue? Please let me know what you think as I am ready to bring it back again to Best Buy but before that I intend to contact ASUS on chat mode and would like to have your ideas on this issue before I address them with it.
Thanks and sorry t be such a pain with this frustrating POS

My ASC (Advanced System Care) is up for annual renewal and I was wondering if peeps here still recomend it for WIN8, VISTA, and XP. Three licences come for $14.77.
Thanks

Ultrabook Asus i5 back from shop and things are not looking hopeful at all. Geek Patrol at Best Buy said he thought it could be hd but did a diagnostics test and said it was fine. Guess what? ASUS replaced the hard drive on warranty. I feel a long road of pain and doubt about to commence. Anyway left it on in study upstairs and we will see if it shuts down by itself for no good reason. Bet you it will. Meanwhile the old TOSH that had BSODs for 6 months continuously last year is the only puter I trust now to work ....
