Hi!
I did a refresh and the wifi connection and all visible SSIDs came back. Did have to reinstall a few programs but now back in business. Win8 really sucks and I think the apps make it a very fragile OS. It is pathetic that I have had to do several re-installs and refreshs in barely one year of ownership.
My 5 year old Toshiba performs better overall with Vista!!!!
Thanks for your help.

I have an ASUS i5 that has been nothng but trouble from Day 1. Maybe the Windows 8 os is the reason. I notice that apps create a lot of problems freezing up the machine completely when trying to view a video etc. I hesitate to upgrade to 8.1 but if I did and things were worse than ever maybe that would inspire me to just install Windows7.
Anyway, my real problem is that my wireless connection does not work anymore. The wifi light is on. I have been able to turn it on and off so that does not seem to be the problem. In device manager is says that wireless adaptor is working fine. Driver is most recent.
I do get a broadband connection but no wireless connection. I do not see my SSID anymore when clicking on the wifi icon in the icon tray. Come to think of it I do not see any SSIDs of the neighbours or anything like I used to get. Anyone know how to fix this?
Also I often get these open boxes about dialing a modemm and PPOE gibberish.
Thanks for any sugggestionsésolutions.

That is a very good question!!
lol
I am in Alicante Spain for 6 weeks then off to Portugal for about the same. Will visit other areas in between. So far finding out that besides booze and vegetables and fruits cost of living is pretty much the same as in Canada. I was expecting cheaper but I am frugal and often am able to hunt down best bargains. Great talking to you ou.
Thanks Don that is a good reminder.
Spent many hours trying to fix a corrupted registry database gleaning advice here and from MSFT community boards and elsewhere and in the end re-installing Windows 8 was the only thing that worked.
I suppose that if I had a lot of programs and files installed it would have been a tougher decision, but there really was not that much.
Updates finally all installed successfully and waiting for the 8.1.
If Win8 continues to create problems periodically I am going Win 7 or Linux.
Interesting, I just noticed that all DEFENDER updates work but not the others.
Thanks! I have been through these menus and nothing worked. I guess I either reinstall Win8 and lose everything or just get a copy of Win7 or Linux Mint and move on ... I read on MSFT community board that using registry cleaners is not good. Maybe my use of ASC did a number on my machine.
I could reinstall Windows and lose all apps etc How can I use safemode?
Yes, what should I look for In Explorer in C drive and what should I do in safe mode to fix registry/ thanks very much/
Tried restore but no dice. Is there a way to tell if I have a copy of Win8 on a partition and use that to repair registry?
Thanks
Not looking good --- Windows would not even load properly when trying to do repairs etc. One of these days it will not open. Maybe I should just reformat the drive and install linux.
I just tried automatic repair and Windows would not even load up properly so I did refresh which I am sure will not help at all. RESTORE did not work going thru the WIN8 menu. I will try F* but I think I just did that using W
Found this about corrupt registry databases but looks pretty complicated to me. I guess there is no easier way to fix registry database?
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-8-recovery-environment-command-prompt/
Maybe try AUTOMATIC REPAIR in advanced options? Not feeling confident but what do I have to lose??
Windows update troubleshooter keeps telling me it is fixed but when I reboot it says "failure to configure updates reverting to ..".
The two following components seem to be at root of problem:
CODE800703F1
CODE8007371C
I do not have the Windows disc so repair not possible that way. Is there a copy of Windows 8 in a partition? If so how can I access it and use it to repair corrupt file or registry.
Could also be a conflict with an app but how do I know which one?

Oops just found this ...Ok here is what the error codes mean:
800703F1 The configuration registry database is corrupt. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms838126.aspx
8007371C The SMI primitive installer failed during setup or servicing. (searching I found the suggestion of Run 'sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r /f' If that doesn't eliminate this error can you also update \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log)
What do I do if I do not have Windows disc?
Having problems updating Windows 8. Keep getting message that Updates failed to configure probably and that Win8 was going back to previous settings.
Tried a clean boot and the Update Readiness tool as well as Malicious Removal Tool that showed no infection -- nothing works so far -- kinda frustrating.
Of course they are but they know peeps will pay top dollar for status and "reliability" so they exploit that perception to the maximum.
The old adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.
Congrats!
I have done the same thing when desperate that is trying unusual remedies and I find that sometimes for no reason at all they work. My TOSHIBA was fine for about three years and then I got BSOD constantly and could never figure out why. I tried everything but it was so random that nothing ever seemed to fix it permanently. Then all of a sudden I tried an AVG suite I got online and I never got an BSOD again for well over a year.
Suddenly last weekend after spending a lot of time on kijiji looking for a used bike, I got one! Hasn't happened again since.
My brand new ASUS randomly shut down every week and then every month when I got it as a birthday gift in JAN. Now for no good reaon that I know of it has not shut down in two months. Best Buy sent it to ASUS twice and then basically told me you are on your own. Contacting ASUS was no better.
As far as I am concerned all these computer companies are the same. They hope their computers will work most of the time at least during the warranty. If not they will basically wear you down till you give up or you make such a fuss that they will on occasion do something.
ASUS TOSHIBA or ACER there ain't no stinkin difference. I got an ACER Chromebook to travel this winter and I love it! Yet a lot of people have told me that ACER sucked and that ASUS was awesome. At work we had an i7 HP and it was a piece of junk!
IMO just luck of the draw.
I tried the AVG Internet Security Suite and it gobbled up to many resources on my 3 year old Toshiba with Vista. BTW after well over a year without a BSOD I got one after too mnay clicks on KiJiJi.
I just bought a Chromebook for travel, but the other reason was to install Linux as a dual boot. Do you hve any problems for rivers with peripherals such as printers?
Anybody here have experience with long term holiday rentals in Spain or Portugal? I would appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice you might have ... cheers!
So sorry zigzagman, I didn't have any notable changes when I did the scan on my machine (FIREFOX only) but obviously I don't have many add-ons or extensions.
I had Visual Bee an annoying toolbar that malawarebytes was unable to remove but kept giving positive infection hits.
ADWcleaner took care of it in mere minutes. Very small light program but very effective.
Earnings report may be scary but may not have much new except a couple of expected write-downs which may take stock down brief;y but not for long.
imo
$4 from ows and at least another $4 safely in short term
divvy is good
Looks like long road back to previous highs. When gold goes back to $1900 per oz and higher abx will be back to $35-50 range.
Barrick very close to its low. Under $12 woud surprise me. Gold season is upon us and price of gold and abx should start rising significantly in next two weeks unless ABX has more bad news about production or permits.

Agree! The mantra in the media is that powerhouse economies are getting back on their feet, namely Europe and USA. Both have horrific debt problems that are far from resolved at all. As soon as people realize this truth remains, gold will rally again even if lending rates are at their lowest. As well India, China, Russia and Germany want gold and the less is available the higher the price will go. Simple law of supply and demand. Gold has been manipulated by powerful entities trying tomask certain economic realities, but it will not be successful indefinitely
The Andalucian Friend by Alexander Soderberg is a great read. First novel by a Swedish writer and reminiscent of Girl with a Tatoo but better.
OK just want to let the board know that the WGA pop-up was legitimate in our case. We went directly through MSFT website and did the diagnostis to register XP on our desktop and evertything was the same as what was asked of us thru pop ups. Better safe than sorry and I still don't get the three day thing nor about hardware change but a recent post here about MSFT and FBI working together to take down and Eastern Europe gang of hackers may be a part of the answer. Maybe.
Thanks everybody for your patience. We really appreciate the time you take to help us get at the right solutions.
Coincidence or explanation as to why MSFT is checking validity of OSs?
ok doing that now. Also says that hardware has changed in last three days so XP needs to be reactivated. That sounds bogus as there have been no hardware changes in last ten years.
Also says this copy of XP is not activated but has been working for 12 years
Ok this is kind of weird. My bro has XP on a desktop and today he got an alert saying WINDOWS PRODUCT ACTIVATION and that he had three days to renew it. Seemed scammy so told him to say no for now till we found out more. I know XP is on the way out but is this alert to reactivate XP legitimate?
Possibly a virus or script problem (corrupted file)?
Barely back a week and computer shutdown for no reason. In event log I see many problems why does ASUS ignore them? Shutdown occurred around 9:10am. Please have a look below and tell me if something sticks out.
Thanks

Going home tomorrow morning on early flight
Greetings from Dubrovnik Croatia!
Interesting and beautiful country but I can see why some may stay away. Not cheap by any stretch but very affordable. I loved germany and look forward to France.
Zadar was the best city in Croatia. Bus drivers must have gone to kamikaze school. You put on your seatbelt and pray but you know that 3000 foot drop will have no mercy.
