Thanks Flo but I am so damn lazy that I just did it on the Win8 machine after search of settings (gee the TOSH is all the way downstairs in the basement :). In future I must remember to try finding an answer to a question before asking it here as I found the computer name change page on WIN* right after posting my question. duh.

If this computer name change works I see that it could eliminate 80-85% of error messages. I still have some ESENT 37 error messages but they are not critical and only constitute about 5-10% of errors.

I am not overly optimistic this has anything to do with random shutdowns but at least it does not hurt to fix the problems that can be fixed.

I still think that the BIOS needs to be updated but in Device Manager all drivers say they are the latest and best. On the ASUS website I have not been able to find any appropriate updates for this machine.
