LOL, they should be pleased they are getting them that low considering their level of performance and software ubiquity ! Mediatek have nothing in the same performance ballpark. Intel is going to keep its 60% GMs whether the vendors like it or not.

Bay Trail-T/Android 4.2 platform is set to be released in mid-November.

The sources pointed out that MediaTek is offering its ARM-based solutions at around US$15. If Intel can offer a similar price, it would allow the CPU maker to rise to the same level as others in the game, the sources explained.

So android is a month after windows and it's only 4.2; in mid November. This completely misses the year-end shopping season no? with an android release one version behind the latest (my phone has 4.3; I think it's out).

Also power/performance must be OK but not significantly better as people seems to want similar pricing to existing solutions.

When Airmont comes out in a year's time, Silvermonts will be dropped to that price they are looking for and then that will be the beginning of the end for ARM.

Intel currently prices Bay Trail-T-based processors at around US$20-30; however, vendors believe that if Intel is willing to drop the price to US$15, it would have a great chance of turning the tables on ARM-based chipmakers such as Qualcomm, MediaTek and Nvidia.

Yeah I am sure vendors would like Intel to cut its prices in half.

What is the value of anything? What you can get someone else to
pay for it. If Bay Trail based products are as good as they seem
to be then Intel shouldn't have any problems selling them.

A few weeks ago I bought a Samsung laptop with an IVB i7 chip
in it for my son. I looked up the i7 SKU's price on ark.Intel and
the 1k list price was close to half what I paid for the laptop. No
doubt IVB gear is being discounted to make way for Haswell but
IMO the idea that a $20-$30 Bay Trail chip is too expensive for
a $200-$300 tablet or smart phone sounds like self-serving BS
from those anonymous Taiwanese OEMs.

Now I have no doubt that ARM licensees are going have to drop
their prices significantly to compete against Bay Trail but IMO
Intel should not participate in a race to the bottom. Intel sure
didn't have to compete against AMD on the basis of price.

I could be wrong and Intel may have to drop prices to win share
quickly and deeply but they shouldn't *begin* an attack using
their awesome new weapon holding a defeatist attitude.

US$20-30 is the going rate for a quad A15 like Exynos Octa or Tegra 4 so a 2.4 GHz Bay Trail will be superior at the same price. Mediatek's MT8135 offering is a 1.5 GHz dual-core A15 1.2 GHz dual-core A7 big.little quad which is not in the same performance ballpark as any Bay Trail.
