Not sure how big your potato bed was, but maybe like cauliflower. Something that produces a flowering terminus or heavy fruit. Not tomatoes, or anything related to Solanum family.
You plant fall potatoe crop now? Some people depending on where they live say they have hard time finding seed potatoes and if going online most places out by now. I'd like to try to fine some and heavy straw on bottom before some dirt then once near harvest heavy straw over the top come winter and see if depending on temps here dig some up as winter goes on.

You can do so much with potatoes. We love our hash browns & eggs though hate buying them from the store.
Some evenings we just have a potatoe with bacon, onions, and what ever else we have available. It's a meal right there.
