Gary, very sorry to hear you are in so much pain and having problems with the insurance bureaucracy. You are on Medicare, aren't you? I am on a Kaiser medicare advantage plan. I've had a lot of various expensive scan done this year, CT scans for pain, endoscope scans because I became anemic so they wanted to make sure I wasn't bleeding anywhere internally. There hasn't been any issue about needing to wait because I wasn't in pain long enough - that's crazy! I did have to have a full 10 day course of antibiotics before I could get a sinus CT scan for headache pain but that was reasonable. I would not have thought that Medicare would screw you around so much when you are in severe pain!

Gary, please don't let insurance ruin your care.

Pay for the MRI yourself. Even if it is $2000 (probably high), it's worth it to move your treatment forward.

You can fight about reimbursement later.

Sorry to hear Gary.
You may want to check out patient MRI places in your area that accept cash pay . You can actually bargain with some of them and is usually much less than what they charge insurance . Just as an example you can select the study and it will give you the price . I did quick search and they had MRI lumbar spine for less than 300

Gary,
Had pain from back for several years. Best remedy I have found was walking. Best part was a lack of Doctors and insurance companies. God Bless. Bill

Gary, sorry to hear about your problem. Turns out outside of age we also have back issues. Not sure what your cause, but I have a collapsed disc at the L4-L5 and a stenosis at the L2-L3. For several years I've been able to avoid invasive surgery with annual epidurals, one ablation and managing my activity by doing yard work and other strenuous activity taking my time and sort rest if the discomfort gets too bad. I'm scheduled for two procedures in the next couple of weeks, both at the stenosis site. I'm using an outfit called the Pain Doctors. Their treatments are non-invasive and depending on your pain tolerance can be done with or out anesthesia. I've done mine without, worst pain is the injection of a local. I've done without as I want to be able to drive as soon as they've done. Epidural is a cortisone specialized for spine issues, I suspect you know that. The other procedure is fairly new, called mild(trademark) and works by removing the excess ligament that impinges the column. Described as removing the kink in a drinking straw. So anyway, you might want to see if there is a facility similar in your area.
Other thought is check for any independent imaging outfits in your area, I believe they are considerably less costly than a hospital imaging unit. At any rate, hope your pain will decrease.

Praying for your quick recovery. I also know the pain of sciatica. I was lucky and it went away after about 5 years. But I'm still careful wrt things that used to kick it off.

Gary - Feel better. The heathcare system is apathetic. What about dental coverage? Medicare doesn't provide any. Mom needs $7,000 to $9,000 in dental work. In this country, and many others, dental care isn't a human right, it's a luxury.

Gary, I have the same problem with it showing up at intervals of 2-3 years between. My solution has been using heat patches 24 hrs. per day until its
gone. it usually takes 7-8 days and i'm good for another couple of years. Again I wear the patches until they start to cool down and I change
about 4 times per day. Works for me. Good luck
