The WSJ has a nice article tonight describing how Fla got away with their behavior. It makes some good points.

jbog,

I don't know if you read the whole article, but if you did, you completely mis-read it.

Local governments in Florida, especially those in denser areas (where Democratic mayors tend to be in charge) did put shelter-in-place in their communities. Also, Florida residents, many with close ties to New York State, saw what was happening in New York and learned from the mistakes made in New York. The article gives good statistics on how much commerce declined in Florida.

It's true that De Santis was half-hearted, at best, in his response, but local communities took responsibility on their own and De Santis, thank goodness, made no effort to stop them.

It's always interesting to me how ideology clouds our thinking and our reading. Florida, the article makes clear, didn't "got away with their behavior," if by that you mean that Florida put no lockdowns in place.

Americans are done with shelter in place. That's history.

Italy, Spain and France were smart and sheltered in place for 2 months with far tougher restrictions than the US did. They were able to drive down the number of new cases and deaths dramatically. Only now they are considering slowly open. This isn't about ideology or freedom, it is about epidemiology. Americans are showing they are weak, selfish and ignorant. This isn't going to to end well for us. We will get to 100,000 deaths by the end of May, in a mere 3 months, and that is with shelter in place and social distancing. It isn't just about deaths, it is about large numbers of people being hospitalized for several weeks as well, and those who recover can take many more weeks to get back to somewhat normal.

Hopefully, people will still practice social distancing and wear some type of protection but they'll be fed up with that soon

Yes, Americans are showing they are weak, selfish and ignorant. This isn't going to to end well for us.

Talk about declaring victory way too soon. You left off Texas, Iowa, Nebraska and Tennessee among others.

All said and done, and while any death is sad, I'm not sure what the stats will look like in a year. U,S has around 255k deaths per month which has been growing about 1.1% per year because of our aging population.

It'll be interesting to see what 2020 looks like when the data is done. My guess is it won't be a drastic change

Once again, the concept that a highly contagious and highly lethal diseases and causes large number of people to be hospitalized can't be compared to other causes of deaths has eluded you.
