And, hay, I'm not dumping on Jersey Mike's. They are obviously very popular. I only tried them ONCE and I found the bread was dry and tasteless and I have never tried them again.

Where hoagies are concerned, the bread is VERY important. The Subway chain has some good fillings, but the bread is an unmitigated disaster. They brag about how it's "baked in-house". That is a mistake. It means they ship mass-manufactured dough out to their shops, and the shops cook the dough in inadequate ovens. The result is truly terrible bread.

They should be buying it from people who know how to make bread. You know: bakers.

The Green Tortoise sounds like the Hampton Jitney. We went to the Hamptons on Vaca in the off season a few years back. The LIRR has a limited schedule during winter, we took the LIRR out there butt the Jitney back to Manhattan. It was okay.

Jersey Mike's is not my fave, it just happens to be next door from getting my hair fixed.

Never tried Firehouse, maybe sum day. We've donated to tunnels to towers and to the Tennessee tornado, so I guess I will have to try a firehouse.
