If they can get close to Mediatek in capabilities, I think they'll earn a chunk of MSS easily. The first 20-40% is a given.
I think that's the flaw in your thinking. Mediatek understands their very survival depends upon keeping Intel from establishing a beachhead in the low price segment..and will fight you tooth and nail for it. They pretty much built their whole business on producing very capable single-digit ASP chipsets...so you'll be fighting on very familiar turf for them.
and don't forget China Inc has made growing their semiconductor industry a long term priority..so they'll be looking to keep a substantial amount of the "low hanging fruit" for their domestic co's also..
it's going to be a long-term war of attrition imo...
It is a bit of a lead but you haven't discounted for going to a worse technology. That was using Intel's 22nm FinFET technology. Do you really think SoFIA will be able to achieve that in 28nm and without FinFET in its thermal envelope? It is much more likely to be limited to 1.5GHz at the very best. I was basing size on transistor count.
(Somehow this message got duplicated so I've blanked the other one. I haven't the foggiest how I achieved that effect)
Moving the design to 14nm in their own fabs should be part of the strategy. They'll be on an advanced process well ahead of Mediatek and other low-end vendors.
isn't it more typical in the semi- biz to leave the lower ASP/more commoditized products on the trailing edge processes. e.g. I believe there's still quite a bit of 65nm activity going on..
