My mother went to high school from, I think, 1928 to 1932. Her school had LOTS of sports for girls. And they competed against girls from other schools. She did track and swimming. And in regular gym classes they had to do hard stuff like climbing ropes. She liked that. I'd have hated it. REALLY hated it.
We moved to Indiana when I began junior high. We had intramural soccer, but nothing else for girls except for regular gym class. In high school, girls could play intramural basketball. There were no real competitive sports for us. We learned some gymnastics, but only the boys got to compete at the state level.
lol, my mother never learned Esperanto. But half the girls at her school wanted to be aviatrices when they graduated. Amelia Earhart was very big back then...
