Jasbg & Postes, as to Du's relative experience and credentials, I've seen mixed information here. I've got that it was her "first bench trial". Are we certain this was her "first patent" trial? I had made this claim earlier, however, I seem to remember being rebutted.

In any case, as part of best practices, the system should require Judges to share if they've suffered a life changing event. The rule would apply to a certain time frame before a trial's start date. If the rule is too invasive for some, another option, would be to voluntarily recuse....

Let's be real, Judges have been asked to be recused for reasons far less innocuous. Unfortunately, we won't see fairness in practice.
