#109030 RE: 24601 #109020

(Edit): Hi 24601, not quite, here's the scoop:

Dell is indeed going to bundle a special Dell-branded ETS starter version, we call it ETS "lite", much the same way TPM chip makers ST Micro and Atmel bundle Embassy Security Center and Wave's CSP. Actually Dell already gets ESC/CSP from ST Micro with their chip, but that is neither here nor there. The ETS "lite" provides much of the basic client functions of the full ETS 5.0, ESC/CSP that come with the chip are interfaces only not client functions.

You are correct that the full ETS 5.0 version will be available from Dell as an "upgrade", as it is now, but with the licensing agreement signed in December, Dell will actually pre-install and/or make available as a free download their own ETS "lite". This is much, much different and better than the previous arrangement where Dell was merely a reseller of Wave software. Now, Dell will bundle Dell ETS "lite", and pay Wave a royalty for each and every unit shipped, exactly as ST Micro does, and while we don't know the exact amount, it's a given it's more than ST Micro.

Without a doubt IMO, Dell does not view the royalties it will pay every month to Wave as wasted money or just write it off to the cost of building the machine, Dell plans on selling Wave software, which will more than cover the royalties on the ETS "lite" bundle.
