I guess you haven't looked at their lineup recently. While the well known consumer products are all material based and you could somewhat group them together their new information, software and electronic groups are completely different.

This sentence from Morningstar’s report shows why 3M is not a true conglomerate (as previously noted in #msg-93382782):

While 3M sells thousands of products to disparate end markets, the firm cites only a few dozen technological pillars that support its wide array of offerings.

All of these “technological pillars” are related to materials science, 3M’s core expertise.
