Homer Pateridis of St. Lazare was a regular at the Harwood Golf Course in Vaudreuil where he joined a foursome on Friday afternoons for what he called the Greco-Roman challenge.


He dubbed it the Greco-Roman challenge because he played with his brother George Pateridis and two other brothers, friends Tony Di Paolo and Mike Di Paolo. The weekly tee-off was just one of the many ways Pateridis’ good humour, sportsmanship and, love of family and community came together in his lifetime.

Homer Pateridis died Friday at his St. Lazare home, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was in his 53rd year.

"He was a happy, upbeat guy, the kind of person who would join something as a volunteer and, end up doing everything in no time," said his brother George Pateridis, Monday. "He was welcomed pretty much everywhere he went. He could have run for mayor."

Pateridis grew up in the Greek community in Côte des Neiges but loved St. Lazare, the off-Island community to which he moved with his wife Jane and their three children, 12 years ago. A chemical engineer educated at Concordia University, Pateridis started up a number of successful businesses, most recently, a website design firm, Lightsmedia.com. But the affable civic-minded man was never defined by his work alone.

Every Christmas, he happily dressed in costume and played "the taxman" as part of a theatrical re-enactment of Mary and Joseph’s walk to Bethlehem and the virgin birth, put on by the Hudson Community Baptist Church and organized by his wife Jane.

He coached 14- and 15-year-old Hudson and St. Lazare boys for the inter-city soccer league. He played hockey Thursdays at John Abbott College with one league and, on Mondays and Wednesdays with another league at the St. Lazare Sportsplex.

He was a founding member of the St. Lazare Citizens Action Committee on Public Security (CACPS), a non-political public safety group that works in partnership with the Sûreté du Québec. The group’s logo was designed by Pateridis.

"We would pair up with a police officer for action campaigns," said Gilles Boudreau, the founder of CACPS. "I can remember one time when we were doing a door-to-door, telling residents how to protect themselves from break and enters. Homer was the only one invited in for coffee and cookies. "

"He brought a tremendous amount of humour to everything he did," said Boudreau.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the chapel at the Collins Clarke MacGillivray White funeral home in Pointe Claire.

In addition to his wife Jane and brother George, Pateridis leaves his three children Kathryn, Jonathan and Christopher, his mother Catherine and niece Thalya and nephew A.J.

Fraudulent mortgage broker fined after pleading guilty

Andrea Michael Cortellazzi, has been fined and placed on probation after pleading guilty to fraudulently collecting fees to arrange mortgages and for operating as an unregistered mortgage broker.

Cortellazzi, who operated James Andrews Development Corporation on Bank Street, pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud over $ 1,000 in connection with complaints that he collected fees to arrange mortgages, but didn't refund the money when mortgages were never arranged.

He was ordered to repay $ 7,685 to two victims whose complaints led to the fraud charges and was placed on 24 months probation, after pleading guilty in Provincial Court in Ottawa.

Cortellazzi also faces a fine of $ 5,000 or five months in prison, for operating as a mortgage broker without registering under the Ontario Mortgage Act.

Cortellazzi's wife, Giovanna Raso, who operated JRC Realty Consulting at the same Bank Street location, was convicted in February of carrying on a business as a mortgage broker. She was fined $ 2,000. Cortellazzi's employee, Denis Clairmont, was also fined $ 500 after conviction for the same offence.

Quebec AMF files Penal proceedings in Millenia Hope (MLHI)

Montréal – The Autorité des marchés financiers (the “AMF”) has launched penal proceedings against six individuals involved in the illegal distribution of securities of Millenia Hope. This suit consists of 106 charges for which the AMF is seeking fines totalling $1,677,680.

The investigation led by the AMF shows that investors were solicited through classified ads offering financial help to holders of RRSPs or other registered plans, a common RRSP fraud scheme.

Leonard Stella, the founder of Millenia Hope and its former chairman and CEO, is facing 36 charges for declaring that Millenia Hope’s securities would be listed on a stock exchange, making illegal distributions and breaching an undertaking made to the AMF.

The AMF has filed 26 charges against Réginald Alfred Groome, a securities dealer representative at the time of the alleged offences, for illegally distributing the securities of Millenia Hope, making misrepresentations to investors and declaring that the securities would be listed on a stock exchange.

Claude-Yvon Provost, who has been covered by an order to cease activities as an adviser since November 2007, is facing 24 charges for illegally distributing securities of Millenia Hope, acting illegally as a dealer, making misrepresentations to investors, declaring that the securities would be listed on a stock exchange and breaching a decision of the Bureau de décision et de révision.

The AMF has also filed 12 charges against Mario Paquin, who has been covered by cease trade and freeze orders in the matter of Carrefour since December 2009, for illegally distributing securities of Millenia Hope, acting illegally as a dealer and making misrepresentations to investors.

Claude Valade, who is also covered by orders in the matter of Carrefour, was previously found guilty of illegal practice and aiding with illegal distributions and is awaiting a penal trial for market manipulation, faces five charges for illegally distributing securities of Millenia Hope and acting illegally as a dealer. The AMF has also brought three similar charges against Claude Bossé.

The Autorité des marchés financiers (“AMF”) is the regulatory and oversight body for Québec’s financial sector.
