The aim of ag-biotech companies is to get the crops in question (corn and soybeans) to use fertilizer more efficiently.

What does efficiently mean here?

Catalytically? (leaving element in soil or plant)

Or just functioning with less of the element in the soil?

Too bad I am a city slicker - bet I would know this if I was a farm boy.
