p 173 houghton mifflin

introduction to womens role :

the arabic word for for harem means santuary and sacred place
the harem women had great political influence and negotiated with foreign powers

Slaves were unique in the ottoman empire
Some people wanted their children to become slaves. to be a slave of the sultan was a great honor. The jannissaries were a kind of slave that parents wanted their children to become.
Most janissaries were christians who converted to Islam. they then went to schools. the grand vizier and many officials were slaves.

Translation for someone who knows nothing else:

a harem is a good thing and women were powerful

slaves are also good and they were a good thing under the ottoman empire.

the word dhimi never comes up

Last time I checked the "state" still reports to the tax payers. Exposing children to history and or "alternate lifestyles" is nothing new.... Anyone that thinks it is soley up to the Public school system to teach THEIR kids how to think needs to send THEIR kids to an orphanage IMO. It is solely the parents responsibility to teach the kids what is right and what is wrong and to know the difference. If anyone disagrees with what is being taught in their kids PUBLIC school they have 2 choices...
1. Move them to a private school that only teaches them the "RIGHT" things. (A really scary idea IMO)
2. Take an active role in the school system and try and make changes.
I think much of what is wrong with todays kids is because many, many parents have left the upbringing and teaching of Children solely to the School systems. Many many parents are not taking an active role like they should.

Yes, public schools are "the State"!

And... in the true Born Again, or Evangelical tradition, we should all have 9 children, and home school them in that ("saved") tradition. To heck with the rights of their mothers! And I am sure the Born Again folks will say these women are very fulfilled, and thrilled with their life's mission. Who am I to say they are not? To each his or her own...
