UPDATE 8.24am: THE Defence Force Association has defended the use of taxpayer money to fund a soldier's sex change operation.

THE Defence Force is considering paying about $10,000 towards a sex change operation for one of its soldiers.

A psychological and medical assessment is being conducted to determine whether Defence
money can be used because the male officer has a medically diagnosed gender identification issue.

Australia Defence Association executive director Neil James has defended the potential expenditure, arguing if it is
for a medically diagnosed reason the surgery should be covered by taxpayers as it would be for anyone else.

"I think people have got to look at this in the broad, they'd be covered by Medicare anyway
so it really doesn't matter how the taxpayer pays for it," he told radio station 3AW. .. more ..
