It all depends on what your house is made of. My house is CBS construction and is about 5500 sq. ft. so I had quite a ways to push the signal to the back bedrooms upstairs. Mine is 802.11 G also.
The signal made it to those rooms, but it was weak. Getting the range extender changed it to an excellent signal.
