I don't think McCartney and Lennon were over-rated in the '70's - as their reputations took some big hits... McCartney became more known (and talked about) as a light weight, and Lennon was mostly unproductive and coasting on his Beatles legacy. I personally think much Lennon's solo work was crap, with a few noteable exceptions - Instant Karma being one, and several cuts on "Mind Games" were good pop songs. McCartney's solo stuff (counting Wings) was hit and miss, imo - with some of the "hits" being damn good pop songs, and the misses being over-indulged fluff. In anycase, impossible for them to live up to the string of albums they churned out with the Beatles, when most rock/pop bands just followed in their wake as best they could.
