<<he has proved himself intrasigent both in the attempt to assassinate the former US President, and the continued pursuit of nuclear weapons, which was the cause of the the last Gulf War to begin with.>>
1. I find it odd (to use a polite word) that the Bush admin and friends keep making the suggestion that Saddam's attempt to assassinate Bush Sr. is (a) evidence that he is evil, and (b) a reason to go to war with him. Shall we simply overlook the US's many assassinations and assassination attempts over the past century, including trying to kill Saddam himself in the early 90s? Is the US therefore "evil" for considering such tactics? Some would say "yes", but I doubt very many people who sympathize with Ari Fleisher's suggestion that Saddam be assassinated by his own people would agree with this.
2. The cause of the last Gulf War wasn't Saddam's pursuit of nuclear weapons, it was his invasion of Kuwait. The US even had a hand in that, as Zeev has pointed out on several occasions on this thread and others--the US amabassador gave the Iraqi reason to believe that an invasion of Kuwait wouldn't be unwelcome by the US, it would be an "internal" matter between Iraq and Kuwait. This little fact was known 10 years ago, but for some reason has not been publicized recently. Whether it was just stupidity on her part, or a calculated attempt by the Bush Sr. admin to lure Iraq in their stupid invasion, I do not know. I would believe either one. Bush Sr. was the head of the CIA at one time, and mind-game "tricks" of disinformation are hardly strange for that august organization. Some former CIA people have bragged that they played the crucial role in the fall of the Soviet Union in the late 70s by "luring" the Soviets into Afghanistan, knowing that it would be a quagmire from which they would not emerge whole.
