lee: I watched Clement all last year, and I wasn't very impressed. Although he had about the same ERA as Greg Maddux, the Cubs were 13-17 in games Clement started, and 20-13 in games Maddux started. Run support may have had a bit to do with that. But IMO, Greg just pitched better in close games. Clement had a habit of giving up just enough runs at the wrong time to lose the game. As long as the bases were empty, he was fine. But he also had a habit of losing concentration with men on, and hanging a slider. Fenway isn't the place you want to hang alot of sliders with men on base. If it were me making the decison, I believe the money would be better spent elsewhere; and obviously so did the Cubs.

.."they can't afford them all."

Reference to how small the payroll is for the A's and how they can't resign players due to the amount of money they will have to poney up. Hudson is the ace of the staff and they should be able to get a lot of good prospects for him in return, so he is the only one they need to trade at this time.

Clement looks good on paper the last 3 seasons in Chicago. Unheralded as he just hasn't gotten the wins it appears. The comments by others this morning could sum it up.

Sheets is a hard thrower who will always put in a solid performance. Has a good fastball and was in the top 5 for strikeouts.

Burnett & Sheets are both getting $2.5 this year and Sheets will easily be able to a $7+ contract next year. Doubtful that Milwaukee will be able to resign or that he would even like to stay there.
