NsS, yes, but if you are a manufacturer that has invested money in the development of a board you would be a little ticked. I think AMD can't really afford to cause their infrastructure partners pain, so I expect they will keep both sockets around for a good while.

Not a Short, go for the 939 for a desktop system. It does not matter if 754 is EOL'd because you will still be able to get memory, etc., which is the same parts as a 939 system. (Actually I expect 754 to have a long life because it plays well in cheap markets where they only want to populate one memory DIMM.)

There isn't a lot of price difference between a 939 and 754 desktop system at similar performance ratings. Memory bandwidth is key to performance, and expect software to continue to be abusive of available performance improvements. This means that tommorrow's software and add-ons will start to look slow on 754 systems.

That is why I suggest 939. Going for the low end has never really paid off for home users, they always seem to add stuff to the machine to stretch it. 754 is fine for standard office machines, the home user is more demanding.

"I'd be upset if I bought either socket and found out it was EOLed shortly afterward."

Neither one is going to be EOL'd anytime soon. If I were buying now, I'd go with the Socket754, but I am a cheapskate. My r30000z has an A64 3000+ Socket754 processor in it, and it does just fine. I have even loaded Rightmark CPU and have cut the voltages down(from 1.1V to 0.9V at 800MHz), and now the fans don't come on at all unless I stress it. And it games just fine, despite the GeForce ToGo 440 it runs things like the Doom3 demo, although the frame rate noticeably slows down under some circumstances.
