My view is

1) it is NOT important how many people READ a message since everyone who scans the board will be counted. That provides no differentiation.

2) it IS important how many people feel strongly enough to MARK a message they think is valuable for others.

3) on popular boards, such an indicator would help readers identify worthwhile messages.
