If that's really the case, then we've seen him blossom from an idiot into an imbecile.

Well, yeah, sure. Your description is entirely plausible. Not entirely innocent, of course, but certainly not a display of something deeply sinister.

A situation involving the lure of fast money to the point moral scruples are cast by the wayside.

Matt had worked at S.I. first, and was a geek.

I don't believe Matt ever worked for SI. He was still in high school when he posted there as "Fatt Matt". He started up IHub in 2000.

He decided to skip college, and start IHub instead. I think he was strongly motivated by the fact that in 1998 the Dreyer brothers had sold SI for $144 million in cash and stock, and in 1999 Rusty Szurek had sold Raging Bull for about $350 million in cash and stock.

That ain't chump change. My guess is that he hoped to do the same, but the dot.com crash put paid to that.

Newly2b: How could any twenty-something-year-old resist?

I am surprised at how much empathy you are displaying for Matt. Frankly a lot of folks have temptation in their lives; most folks choose the right path. Matt betrayed his family, his friends and many that populate his message board.

Jail, forfeiture of ill gotten gains and financial penalties is what he deserves.

Newly

i have to disagree. i think millions do resist, indeed millions chose to do good. matt was weak and had poor character, and a huge ego. he was an adult, he committed crimes. i look at his behavior and i see a sociopath, not a poor kid who was misled.

imho.
