Why is Amazon's patent "deserved" and NeoMedia's not? Please tell.

Isn't it interesting how posters like this so often have a nasty, sarcastic, and condescending tone? Posts like this are tantamount to a twelve year old saying "nya nya nya nya nya".

What sort of person does this?

Someone with a financial reason for doing so...and who is also not exactly Mother Theresa.

DirectMethod, I think you might actually be our new timing indicator. Thanks!

dm,my opinion about google is that the are late to the party and now they see where this heading and how huge this technology will be globally they are going to have to make pace.Look we know they are the global leader for searching the web/computer among other things. But not on the mobile web hasn't been defined yet still in early stages.Google is all about privacy and security its on there website.Makes sense on that alone among others to go indirect. My opinion,it is a matter of time.glta

Because you've been pwn3d by CTIA, Neustar, Sony-Ericsson, and Neomedia.

[Here is a hypothetical example for you - I see a great QR Code on a poster for Company XYZ - I am a teenager with nothing better to do so I go home, create a QR Code that links to a competitor of the original code or an adult website or a militant group - and in the middle the night i quietly take my glue and neatly paste my code over top of the existing code.]

Will they paste such codes in all of the magazines as well? Or on other concrete products such as televisions, beer kegs, licenses, business cards, credit cards, etc?

As an adult, I know that if I do click on a code that leads me to an inappropriate site, I'll have the common sense to look at the code more closely, and notice that somebody decided to paste a fake code over the actual code. And I won't make the same mistake twice. I imagine most kids will catch on quickly as well.

Your logic is very flawed, DM. Try again!

you've just unwittingly posted one of the best arguements FOR the security of the Neustar/Neomedia clearinghouse - registry [indirect] model I've read. It doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to understand why you marketing consultants fear the simplicity of simply licensing through Neustar and building a code campaign for these companies. Sort of diminishes the need for some of your services doesn't it.

I understand the security argument, and think it's a nontrivial one. However any reader is going to show you the URL you're going to before heading there, which rather defeats this scenario. However the user is still paying less attention to the URL than in the scenario that the user must type it in.

But users click on links all the time on the internet, and nothing's collapsed. Heck on the internet I can make a link that *says* foo.com and links to evil.com. Worse problem, in theory.

I don't think this changes between direct and indirect.

I do agree that the value proposition is not so overwhelming that every brand will think of this as must have. Evidence: look at the last 15 years. However I don't think you can say "it just saves 6 keystrokes". It's a no-click, 2 second action, or about 100 and a minute to enter a URL. That is a vast difference in barrier to resistance.

Would you click an ad on the web if it took even 10 seconds to complete? if it involved typing? Sounds comical right? that's the size of the difference. Google spends millions trying to deliver ads and results faster by 100s of miliseconds just because it makes enough difference.

"Owned 100% by Amazon - 100% deservedly patented - allows a brand to include detectable images i.e. a logo - to be scanned which will then take you DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY to the destination URL. "

LOGOS! I am sure that you will eat your words.

These patents cover various linkage methods including:

Barcodes, RF/ID, Mag Stripe, Voice, and Other machine readable and keyed entry identifiers

Looks like Google will have to license voice search also.
