Intel miscalculated too as shown by the downturn exposing the inherent overcapacity I have always talked about with drastic effect on profits. Barcelona beat Harpertown in many benchmarks, it was competitive. Sparc kept Sun alive for years much more than low margin x86 ever did. Customers only left in droves once Sun raised the White Flag as they did for DEC earlier which is a lesson that HP should learn too if it's thinking of messing its HP_UX base around. AMD x86 is providing GF with the volume it needs to fill its FABs and it will prop AMD as necessary to provide those volumes, it will be a constant thorn in Intel's side going forward. Ruiz assured AMD's long-term survival regardless of its year to year competitiveness, pure genius. He also just got $1.25bn out of Intel and eliminated foundry limitations, break free ! lol ;-)
