No longer does AMD have to fight tooth and nail to get volume. It could now focus on niche, high margin markets/products where Intel doesnt compete directly and be very profitable.

If there's a profitable niche somewhere, why wouldn't Intel compete?

I'm beginning to see this deal as Intel bought all of AMD's excuses for $1.25 Billion. Not a bad deal at all.

If there is part of the x86 processor market that is 1) high
margin, and 2) too small to interest Intel, what makes you
think servicing it will generate enough revenue and profit
to support AMD? If you compare their potential starting
points in their current x86 design portfolios and their
available design resources what makes you think AMD
can profitably address new found x86 niches faster or
better than Intel?

Over the past quarter century Intel has worked hard to
push the boundaries of x86 into new areas (servers in the
mid 90s, netbooks and and handheld more recently) while
AMD simply offers lower priced me-too alternatives for the
largest and most mature of the x86 markets Intel has long
since established. IMO that is still the best path for AMD
to take for survival.

Kind of like Via does, right?

C'mon Joey. You really think that will happen? Or, will the delicious taste of 30-50% of the market tempt them to dump massive amounts of product on the market at low price and then later raise margins on those customers locked in?

What has changed at AMD to now become a non-sleazy management? Ruiz leaving is the wrong answer; you don't change a corporate culture that fast.
