It could now focus on niche, high margin markets/products where Intel doesnt compete directly

If there is part of the x86 processor market that is 1) high
margin, and 2) too small to interest Intel, what makes you
think servicing it will generate enough revenue and profit
to support AMD? If you compare their potential starting
points in their current x86 design portfolios and their
available design resources what makes you think AMD
can profitably address new found x86 niches faster or
better than Intel?

Over the past quarter century Intel has worked hard to
push the boundaries of x86 into new areas (servers in the
mid 90s, netbooks and and handheld more recently) while
AMD simply offers lower priced me-too alternatives for the
largest and most mature of the x86 markets Intel has long
since established. IMO that is still the best path for AMD
to take for survival.
