Augieboo

I have a dsl line from Qwest. I use to have many of the problems you are describing. I use to call them every day until I got a tech to come out and test the line.

The problem was the connections between my house and their office. It took me months to get it fixed.

Everything was fine after that until one day I started having the same problem. This took another month. Seems this time somebody switched the line at the local box and I was back to the same problem.

Have someone check all the connections in your house first. If they are ok then the problem is them. They will want you to pay for that but at least you might get someone to come to the house. I find the people are much more reasonable than the company.

While I was going through all that the one thing I found was that calling late at night worked much better than calling during the day.

Good Luck

augieboo, I'm no expert on this, but I have an experience like you described a year back. What I found out was the incompartible setting of modem speed and the router speed. Back then, I had my old router set to 100 Mbps, not knowing the modem from the phone line can only handle 10Mbps. Check your router speed and the modem speed. I think they need to be the same unless your router is smart enough to detect the source speed. Next check your netwrok card speed. Most of the new network cards are now equiped with autosensing. That should be all right.
I am with PacBell DSL for more than a year, most of the time are quite stable. They gave me an Alcatel 1000ADSL modem which is only 10Mbps, I bought my Linksys 4 port router (autosensing).I have couple PCs hook up to the router. They work fine so far.

If you have gone through this before, then I have no other suggestion.

Hope this help!

If I had the problems you mention, I would:

"can't find DNS Server" - ping the DNS Server (in Los Angeles PacBell is 206.13.29.12 and 206.13.30.12) {shell out to DOS and type ping 206.13.29.12 <enter>}

Slow Speed - Try a test site like
http://www.cable-modem.net/features/oct99/speed.html

Do you have Dynamic IP DSL service aka PPPoE DSL? This means your Router and modem need to log-on with a User-Name and Password each time you access the internet. Some routers, like LinkSys, have a "Keep Alive" feature or you can adjust your "Idle Time Out" in your router.

Check your Hosts file for spuious connections C:\Windows\system32\drivers\Hosts

If you call PacBell Tech Support, like most places you will speak with people as competent in DSL as your Grandmother, until you reach Level 2 tech support. Definitely turn off your "Block WAN Requests" or Firewall when you call them so their automated diagnostic equiptment can work.

I have had one problem in 4 or 5 years with PacBell DSL which was solved by their Line Man requesting a reboot of the DSLAM in the switching office (the DSL modem on their end).

It's Definitely worthwhile getting a visit from a Digital Services Line Man - they know what they're doing. It's the only reason why I would waste my time calling tech support - to schedule an appointment.

Good Luck

Augieboo,

Take that FREAKING RESOURCE PIG Norton off your system. That is assuredly your problem. If you want to insure that you don't get viruses just don't open email attachments. (99% effective) There are lots of other registry cleaners that work just fine when used bimonthly and removed. (6X per year)

The throughput is very fast, but there is a huge delay first

This is a classic symptom of Pig Norton in action. Norton is the biggest resource pig I have ever seen. I truly don't understand how they stay in business. First of all, if you don't open attachments, you don't get viruses. If you don't get viruses, you don't need Norton at all. You will get 80-90% better performance with Norton gone. To see what I mean, print any page of text and time the print from go button to finish. Then uninstall Norton and restart. Print the same page and time it again. Odds are you will see a 90% increase in speed of the print. I have 2 versions of Norton utilities (both only used once and immediately uninstalled) that I will send to you if you piss me off bad enough. <g>

You will also get way more bang for your buck by defragging your C drive before going to bed every night instead of using Pig Norton.

Hope this helps,

BT

augieboo

Initially I had problems with my cable, slow, knocked-off ect.
I fought with TW over this because they said it was my set-up.

I then performed " tracert " copied those results and emailed those to the Tech's. Got their attention and have been very happy with cable for the last 5 yrs.

""I run Norton Utilities automatically at 2:00 a.m. every single night, so the hard drive and system are kept pristine. I have optimized my MTU, TCP Receive Window, TTL, etc., etc., etc., specifically for the sites I use most often, i.e., StockCharts, IHUB, SI, and my brokers.'

augie
everytime I use norton my system goes haywire
can you direct me to a book or appropriate source as to optimize all you have done?
thanks!
