Take that FREAKING RESOURCE PIG Norton off your system. That is assuredly your problem. If you want to insure that you don't get viruses just don't open email attachments. (99% effective) There are lots of other registry cleaners that work just fine when used bimonthly and removed. (6X per year)

The throughput is very fast, but there is a huge delay first

This is a classic symptom of Pig Norton in action. Norton is the biggest resource pig I have ever seen. I truly don't understand how they stay in business. First of all, if you don't open attachments, you don't get viruses. If you don't get viruses, you don't need Norton at all. You will get 80-90% better performance with Norton gone. To see what I mean, print any page of text and time the print from go button to finish. Then uninstall Norton and restart. Print the same page and time it again. Odds are you will see a 90% increase in speed of the print. I have 2 versions of Norton utilities (both only used once and immediately uninstalled) that I will send to you if you piss me off bad enough. <g>

You will also get way more bang for your buck by defragging your C drive before going to bed every night instead of using Pig Norton.
