The same people who complain about the big payrolls would probably disagree with you. The way the playoffs are set up, it enables teams who can't afford to pay salaries like the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, etc to make it to the playoffs.
I think that you are forgetting that there are a lot of baseball fans outside the NY area and MLB has to keep them interested also.
We have seen wild card teams take it all in the past and that is probably good for baseball.
