Qualcomm barred from using Broadcom 3G patents

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A federal judge in California ruled on Monday that wireless chip maker Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) must immediately stop selling third-generation, or 3G, WCDMA cellular chips that infringe on the Broadcom Corp (BRCM.O) patents.

Nokia claims patent dispute hampers 3G uptake 12:28PM, Tuesday 29th May 2007

Nokia's ongoing patent battle with Qualcomm may work against the uptake of 'third-generation' mobile technology, believes the mobile phone giant.

Nokia is putting its focus for 3G mobile phones on higher-end models, chief technology officer Tero Ojanpera said, despite moves by smaller rivals to lower device costs for the high-speed wireless service.

The company, which makes more than one in three of the mobile phones sold globally, is mired in a legal dispute over patents with US mobile phone chip maker Qualcomm after part of a major cross-licensing agreement expired last month.

The legal dispute centers on Nokia's use of Qualcomm patents for 3G, but it also has a bearing on Qualcomm's chips business, which according to Nokia uses many Nokia-patented technologies.

Jimlur, Since QCOM doesn't manufacture phones or devices anymore, I doubt they would need a new license from IDCC.
