DesertDrifter -- in the Ricci case, Sotomayor ruled based on and in keeping with the governing precedent at the time of her decision -- and then the Supreme Court, 5-4, changed that precedent -- so your comment in that respect relative to Sotomayor and the Ricci case is exactly wrong

The CT firefighters had a complaint and Repubs exploited them.
The firefighters tried to claim Judge Sonia Sotomayor was biased in her judgement - even though the decision they objected to was reached by a PANEL of judges, based on what they believed to be the law. Do you think each time one of the other judges on that PANEL renders a decision they disagree with the CT firefighters will take to the press and object? I don't either - their goal was to criticize ONE judge on that PANEL. Unfortunately for them, that ONE judge has a 19yr judicial history demonstrating she is not biased in her rulings.
"If a judge's ruling is overturned by a higher court..." - What you apparently do not know is in the case of the CT firefighters, it was a PANEL of judges - not ONE judge.
The SC overturned the lower court's decision by a 5-4 vote, which is hardly a majority decision and shows there was disagreement even between the Supremes on the merits of the firefighter's case.

I don't fault these firefighters for taking their case to the SC, but I am sorry they allowed themselves to be exploited by the Repubs and didn't do their own homework and look into Judge Sotomayor's 19yr history on the bench which shows she IS NOT biased.
