#42393 RE: The Duke of URL #42369

If you can buy a $2000 server to run solaris, why spend a Million dollars for a sun system?

Sun isn't expecting them to, they expect them to buy Sun's Opteron servers to run it. And, BTW, they cost more than $2,000 and a lot less than $1M.

Xeon servers will not run Solaris x86 64 and even HP's Opteron servers are neither cheaper nor better.

Re: Sun has had the ability to port Solaris to x86 for at least 3 years.

Solaris is nothing more than Unix with a sun front end.

Boy oh Boy are you ever not paying attention to how hard it is to get an OS out, these days.

Microsoft's a year late with a service pack, and you're trivializing porting an entire OS to a whole new architecture - including all new drivers.

Do you realize that the 32-bit version of Windows 2003 is still missing a lot of drivers?
