Desperado90 -- at least in places, is that natgas locked in the same shales as hold the oil? -- and if so, can both be recovered at once, resulting in better net energy extraction efficiency?

it's nice to know all that natgas and oil are in the shales (and the sands), but the costs and impacts of recovery -- in particular the water usage, even as water for human and agricultural use itself transitions to a scarcer and more expensive resource . . . -- can't help but think that at some point, given the diminishing readily-recoverable supplies/costs/impacts/etc., the primary use for both oil and natgas will (have to) switch from fuel source to industrial feedstock (for production of plastics/fertilizer/etc./etc.) (where of course 'fertilizer' leads into the whole sustainable agriculture discussion)
