Abu Dhabi investors actually expect a return on their money.

The return is state of the art technology.

They are not here to fund AMD's war with Intel.

It's their war now and Intel started it.

and they will choose people capable of prioritizing profits over beating Intel

You wish. Nope, they have enough funds now to bury Intel who is now in their direct path to mpu dominance and full fab capacities. Billions mean nothing to these guys, achieving their aims is what counts.

with the fabs spun off to abu dhabi, et.al., and amd only having 44% ownership of them and a/d also taking a 18% stake in amd itself it's hard to argue that amd owns anywhere near 40% of the fabs in reality.

seems like a/d has more like 60% control.

Why won't Abu Dhabi insist that the foundry make a profit right out of the box or shortly thereafter? If they do this it will put some squeeze on what is left of AMD because they no longer get their chips at cost but at cost plus.

You can also bet that whatever power point slides AMD used to sell this deal had to show profitability for the fab and they will be waved under AMD's noses if things don't pan out.

Finally, anyone who was going to benefit from AMD's success, be it New York or Germany, has to think they have died and gone to heaven because without this deal things were going down the tubes - there probably would not have been a NY fab and Dresden would slowly sink further behind the technology curve - all this assuming that the Germans and NY have any earthly idea what is going on.
